Brittany is located on the north-western tip of France, surrounded on 3 sides by a long and varied coastline which represents one-third of France’s total coastline. The western tips of Brittany are wild headlands jutting out into the Atlantic. The north and south coasts of Brittany have plenty of long sandy beaches as well as small fishing ports. There are rugged cliffs dotted with lighthouses, islands (around 800 islands lie off the mainland) and picturesque harbours. The white sand beaches are suitable for swimming on a France vacation. Because of the Gulf Stream, the climate is mild. It is a unique and traditional region with some of the population speaking their own Breton language. You will see sometimes locals in their Breton costumes on special occasions. Brittany has two local dishes, well-known to the world at large, crepes and galettes.
St. Malo is the most visited place in Brittany. Standing at the mouth of a river, it is an old walled city with fortified ramparts surrounding it. There is an old chateau which is now the town museum. For swimming, there is a 3-kilometre/2-mile-long beach. Other attractions while on trips to France are the Cathedral of St. Vincent, the Privateer’s House, originally a ship-owners home from the 18th Century, an aquarium and a nature park. Opposite St. Malo across the river estuary is Dinard, once France’s number-one resort until the French Riviera took over in the 1930s. It is popular with families attracted to its sandy beaches and its scenic coastal walks. There are a casino and a thalassotherapy spa.
One of the most attractive towns in Dinan, not far from Dinard, and one of the most visited historic towns in Brittany. This is due to its well-preserved medieval centre, fortified wall and ramparts, old cobblestone streets and timbered houses. From St. Catherine’s tower, there are great views of the old port. Dinan is a good place to enjoy crepes and galettes on a France vacation. Quimper is the ancient capital of Cornouaille, Brittany’s most traditional region and has a distinctive Breton character. It was originally settled during Roman times. There are several old churches dating as far back as the 11th Century including a cathedral which is the oldest Gothic structure in Brittany. The stained-glass windows are a highlight. The Breton Museum has devoted to the regional history of the town and the Quimper Museum of Fine Arts has some interesting paintings by local artists Once again, Quimper is a place to try tasty crepes. Paimpol is both a port and a resort. There are a pretty harbour and a historic centre with traditional stone houses and cobblestone streets. One of the oldest houses in the 15th Century is Maison Jezequel. The Tuesday market here is very lively and worth catching on France tours.
All over Brittany are mysterious stone circles. The best known are the Carnac Stones, one of Brittany’s greatest attractions. Three fields contain around 3,000 aligned megaliths which date from 4,000
BC. It is thought they once had a religious or cultural significance. The local Museum of Prehistory has one of Europe’s finest collections of prehistoric objects that have been excavated. Nearby is Carnac-Plage, a 2-kilometre/1.3-mile sheltered sandy beach.
