Hamburg is Germany’s second-largest city and is an exciting metropolis situated not far from the sea in the north of the country. It is Germany’s largest port and the second busiest in Europe after Rotterdam. In the very centre of the city are two immensely attractive lakes which, for a city of this size, on German tours, are different. The impressive City Hall or Rathaus is Hamburg's seat of government and where the Parliament and the Senate assemble. It is open to the public for guided tours around many of its 647 rooms. The courtyard resembles an Italian piazza. The Rathausmarkt in front of the City Hall is a popular place for fairs, markets and concerts.
The Fish Market or Fischmarkt is where you can find almost anything including fish, fruits, flowers, clothing and souvenirs. You can buy a fish sandwich while enjoying the beautiful views of the harbour. The Elbphilharmonie Hamburg is a futuristic complex comprising two concert halls and a hotel. From the rooftop, you can experience spectacular views of the city. St. Michael's Church is one of Hamburg's five Lutheran churches and the most famous church in the city. It is considered to be one of the finest Hanseatic Protestant baroque churches. The 132-metre/430 feet tall spire, totally covered with copper, is a feature of Hamburg’s skyline. The crypt is where some 2,425 people have been buried.
Hamburg has more than 40 theatres and 60 museums and art galleries, all to be enjoyed on travel to Germany. The Hamburg Kunsthalle is one of the largest art galleries in the country and houses one of the few art collections in Germany that covers seven centuries of European art, from the Middle Ages to the present day. The International Maritime Museum is a private museum which is spread over 10 floors of a revamped brick shipping warehouse. It is considered the world’s largest private collection of maritime treasures with model ships, construction plans, uniforms, and maritime art. It contains more than 40,000 items and more than one million photographs. Miniature Wonderland is a model railway attraction and the largest of its kind in the world. The exhibit includes 1,040 trains made up of over 10,000 carriages and 260,000 human figurines. It also houses an airport with planes that actually take off, Hamburg's Museum of Art and Crafts has one of the country's most comprehensive displays of German, European, and Asian applied art, particularly well known for its displays of china, furniture, and silver plus a large collection of keyboard instruments as well as a fine collection of porcelain.
The Reeperbahn is a street and entertainment district in Hamburg's St. Pauli district. In the early 1960s, The Beatles, before they became famous, played in several clubs around the Reeperbahn. The Beatles-Platz (Beatles Square/Plaza) is a plaza in the St. Pauli quarter that has been made to look like a vinyl record. Surrounding the square are five statues representing The Beatles, each of whom played at times during their Hamburg engagements.
