It is easy to spend a week or more in Florence while on an Italy vacation and still not see everything. It is certainly known for its art collections but apart, there is still plenty to experience in this city. The list of must-see sights in Florence should include its beautiful churches and museums. Florence is famous for its history and as a centre of medieval European trade and finance, it was one of the wealthiest cities of its time. It is considered the birthplace of the Renaissance. Its history includes periods of rule by the powerful Medici family. From 1865 to 1871 the city was the capital of the then-recently established Kingdom of Italy. Florence is an important city for the Italian fashion industry being ranked in the top 50 fashion capitals of the world

Florence contains numerous museums and art galleries where some of the World’s most important works of art are to be found. The city is one of the best preserved Renaissance centres of art and architecture in the world and has a high concentration of art, architecture and culture to be enjoyed on a trip to Italy. Starting with the Uffizi Gallery, Florence’s best-known art gallery, it takes you on a trip back into history with works of art organized in chronological order dating from the 13th to the 18th Centuries. The Gallery has stunning frescoed ceilings and a long labyrinth of amazing works of art.

The Palazzo Pitti called the Pitti Palace, is a vast mainly Renaissance-styled palace situated on the south side of the River Arno, a short distance from the Ponte Vecchio. The Palazzo is now the largest museum complex in Florence. The Galleria del Accademia is without a doubt most famous for its sculptures by the great Renaissance artist, Michelangelo. His Prisoners (or Slaves), his St. Matthew and above all, the magnificent statue of David are what draw most of the hundreds of thousands of visitors the museum welcomes every year. Florence is a busy Italian city, full of Italians as well as foreign visitors and the main tourist sights are some of the busiest in the entire country. Always consider reserving entrance tickets in advance.

The Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore is the main church of Florence. It is known generally as the Duomo. It was completed in 1436 in the Gothic style with the dome engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi. The exterior of the basilica is faced with marble panels in various shades of green and pink bordered by white and has an elaborate 19th-century Gothic Revival façade. The cathedral complex, located in Piazza del Duomo, includes the Baptistery and Giotto's Campanile. The three buildings are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The basilica is one of Italy's largest churches and a major landmark in the city.

Possibly the most visited site in Florence on an Italy vacation package is the iconic Ponte Vecchio which simply means an old bridge which connects the two sides of central Florence noted for still having shops built along it. Butchers initially occupied the shops; the present tenants are jewellers, art dealers and souvenir sellers.

The Piazzale Michelangelo is a famous square with a magnificent panoramic view of Florence. The famous view from this observation point overlooking the city has been reproduced on countless postcards and snapshots over the years. It was built in 1869 on a hill just south of the historic centre. The square was dedicated to the great Renaissance sculptor Michelangelo.

Florence is an excellent centre on an Italy vacation for visiting the many attractive Tuscan and Umbrian hill towns such as Siena, Lucca, Assisi and San Gimignano. Pisa and its leaning tower and the wine-growing region of Tuscany are also easily accessible from here.
