If you want to travel somewhere that is truly amazing on an Italy vacation, the Amalfi Coast is one of the most breathtaking regions in the country. It is a stretch of coastline to the south of Naples on the southern coast of the Salerno Gulf. It is deemed so beautiful that it has been awarded the honour of being listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The awesome nature of the Amalfi Coast is due to the way the mountains appear to drop down into the sea with steep cliffs harbouring picturesque towns as well as spectacular scenery. An awe-inspiring drive along the Amalfi Coast, on a trip to Italy, can be extremely rewarding, stopping at some of the resort towns along the way. The road itself is a major engineering feat and it is possibly not a good idea to get too close to the edge.

The top places on the Amalfi Coast

Positano

Although good beaches do exist, they are not the main reason to visit the Amalfi Coast. There are a number of towns to consider including for either a stay or a day sojourn on a trip to Italy. Positano is probably the best-known resort here and used to be a port in medieval times. Today, it is a popular town offering not only two good beaches reached by a set of stairs but amazing coastal views as it is perched on the side of a hill that stretches down to the sea. There is a good selection of quality restaurants, cafes and fashionable boutique stores.

Ravello

Ravello is known for its culture as well as its beauty. Many writers, musicians and composers have made their home here and it still attracts artists and celebrities from around the world. There are festivals throughout the year, featuring mainly classical music. One major attraction on Italy vacation packages is the Ravello Cathedral dating back to the 12th Century with its marble portal and bronze door. There are several charming stately villas, some perched on the edge of the cliffs. 

Amalfi Town

Amalfi town is one of the larger resorts in the region and is surrounded by dramatic cliffs at the mouth of a deep ravine. It has beautiful squares connected by pedestrian streets full of restaurants and small stores. The cathedral here dates back to the 11th Century. It is also a yachting centre where sailboats can be seen bobbing in the water along the marina.

Sorrento

Although officially Sorrento is not part of the Amalfi Coast, it is an excellent place to use as a base when visiting the area on an Italy vacation. It is not unlike the towns of the Amalfi Coast as it is very attractive and is situated on top of a cliff with a first-class beach below. It also has an excellent selection of hotels and restaurants. There is an unspoiled authentic old quarter and a lively main shopping street. It also offers a good transportation system for those travellers wishing to make their own way along the Amalfi Coast.

Capri

While in the area, a visit to Capri would not be amiss on a trip to Italy. This island lies just off the coast and is served by high-speed ferries from Sorrento, the journey taking as little as half an hour. In the summer, there are also services from Positano and Amalfi. On arrival, there is a highly recommended dramatic walk up to the town at the top of the island and once on top, the views make the walk well worthwhile. It is also possible to take local transportation. While in the town, explore the back streets with their small houses and courtyards. There are some Roman ruins in Capri but the big attraction is the famous Blue Grotto, a natural cavern 25 metres/80 feet wide and 60 metres/200 feet long with a very small entrance of less than a metre/3 feet. In order to enter the grotto, visitors lie on their backs in wooden boats. And the blue really is a translucent blue.       

What types of tours are available on the Amalfi Coast?

You can combine a stay in Rome with the Amalfi Coast with stays in Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi – your choice or combinations of these towns. You can combine any of these with Capri. Finally, perhaps a tour including Rome and the Amalfi with stops en route at Vesuvius and Pompeii might appeal.
