Latvia is sandwiched between Estonia to the north and Lithuania to the south on the Baltic Sea. It is also bordered by Russia and Belarus. 45% of the country is covered by natural forests and the coastline covers a distance of 500 kilometres/310 miles, one-third of the country's outline. It consists of long sandy beaches which are pine forests and dunes which can be seen on a Latvia vacation.
It is a country rich in history, culture and architecture. In 2014, Latvia’s capital, Riga, was the European Capital of Culture. The country is also famous for its folk singing and every 5 year holds the Latvian Song and Dance Festival. There are two opera festivals annually in Riga and Sigulda.
Riga draws the largest number of visitors on a Latvia vacation and not surprisingly. Its old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a fascinating area of winding cobblestone streets. There is a good choice of museums and art galleries, a vibrant nightlife and many pleasant restaurants and cafes. Riga has the largest concentration of German Art Nouveau architecture.
Outside of Riga, there are many interesting towns and regions to enjoy on a Latvia vacation. Jurmala is the principal resort on the Baltic Sea coast and is only 25 kilometres/15 miles from Riga with 26 kilometres/16 miles of sandy beach. It is famous for its curative spa treatments. Kuldige is known as the Latvian Venice due to the many rivers that flow through it. It is a beautiful old historical town and has one of the oldest brick bridges in Europe which dates back to 1874. Cesis is a charming town with cobblestone streets, historic wooden buildings and a 16th Century medieval castle. The Museum of History and Art here is well worth a visit. Gauja National Park offers diverse nature with its many rocks and caves. It also contains 500 cultural and historical monuments. The Turaida Museum Reserve has a medieval castle and is known as God’s Garden. In Dunte, one can visit the Munchhausen Museum which is based on the legendary Baron Von Munchhausen who lived in Dunte for 6 happy years.
In Araisi, there are a collection of wooden buildings found by excavations which date back to the time of the Vikings. Rundale Palace in the south of Latvia is a resplendent palace with beautiful ornamental gardens.
