Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania and its largest city. In 2009, it was designated the European Capital of Culture. Its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its 70 streets and lanes and its 1500 buildings offering a range of architectural styles including Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque to be enjoyed on your Lithuania vacation. 

The city has some interesting castles. There is the Gediminas Castle also known as the Upper Castle which dates back to the 9th Century and is reached by funicular railway. It offers the best aerial views of Vilnius and its tower contains some interesting archaeological findings. The Royal Palace is also a castle and is also known as the Lower Castle. Built in the Baroque style, it was once the Royal Residence known as the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. 

The imposing Vilnius Cathedral is a major landmark to be seen on a Lithuania vacation built originally in 1250 with interesting crypts. Cathedral Square is a popular meeting place with its 16th Century bell tower. An unusual street in Vilnius is the Street of Writers which has on its walls artworks and dedications to writers.  

The Presidential Palace is the 16th Century official residence of the President of Lithuania where the daily changing of the guard takes place. 

Vingis Park is the largest in Vilnius with an amphitheatre featuring concerts. 

A very unusual monument in the centre of the city is the Frank Zappa statue made of bronze to commemorate the life of this American popular music celebrity.  

For culture buffs, there are many museums and art galleries to occupy one's time on a Lithuania vacation. These include the Contemporary Art Centre for modern art exhibitions, the Lithuania Picture Gallery featuring national artists, the National Gallery of Art for general art exhibitions, the National Museum of Lithuania with the history of the country, and the Customs Museum exhibiting everything about customs and smuggling, the Literary Museum of Alexander Pushkin, the celebrated Russian poet, the Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museum including a Holocaust exhibit, and the Museum of Genocide Victims depicting the story of Soviet-era victims.

An interesting open-air attraction is Europas Parkas, the Museum of the Centre of Europe. Surrounded by woods, it offers modern and contemporary art including sculptures created by International artists.
