Monaco Vacations, Trips, Tours & Travel Packages
Monaco is an independent sovereign state ruled by the House of Grimaldi on France’s Mediterranean coastline. It is the second smallest country and the second most densely populated country in the world. The Monaco coastline is only 4.1 kilometres/2.5 miles in length. It is known for its casino, yacht-lined harbour and prestigious Grand Prix motor race which runs through Monaco’s streets once a year.
The country is divided into four quarters, Monaco-Ville with its medieval village atmosphere where most of the streets have no vehicular traffic, Monte Carlo which sits on a rocky promontory known as The Rock or Le Rocher and is home to the casino complex, the ornate opera house and many deluxe hotels plus restaurants, boutiques and nightclubs, La Condamine in the port quarter with its traditional markets and Fontvieille, a newer residential district.
On The Rock/Le Rocher stands the Palais Princier, the residence of the reigning Monarchy. This imposing edifice can be toured with a guide at most times. The architecture of the palace is a mixture of styles.
Other landmarks include the Monte Carlo casino, a gambling and entertainment complex entrance to which entails a very strict dress code. St. Nicholas Cathedral, known also known as Monaco Cathedral is where major religious services and concerts take place and where one will find the remains of Prince Rainer 1 and Princess Grace. The Oceanography Museum has exhibits of marine science and houses an aquarium. The Museum of Old Monaco hosts exhibits about the country’s heritage. The Exotic Gardens and Observation Cave is home to several thousand different plants and Fort Francis is an 18th Century fortress, now an open-air theatre. The Prince of Monaco’s vintage car collection can also be viewed.
Walking is by far the best way to get around Monaco. However, there are some areas, such as the Exotic Gardens, that require a large change in elevation and therefore could make for a rather strenuous hike. There are seven public escalators and elevators (all free) that help negotiate the steep slopes of the city.
Many celebrities in the world of entertainment and sports make their home here probably one reason being that it is a tax haven. However, there is no doubting the dramatic beauty of this tiny country.
