The Netherlands is a small compact country of which a substantial amount of land (approximately 17%) has been reclaimed from the sea. The name Netherlands literally means “low country”, a name inspired by its low and flat terrain. Only about 50% of its land exceeds one metre/3.3 feet above sea level and most areas below sea level are man-made. It is a very densely populated country which will be seen on Netherlands vacations and borders Germany to the east, Belgium to the south and the North Sea to the northwest.

The Netherlands has a long history of social tolerance and is generally regarded as a liberal country, having legalized abortion, prostitution and euthanasia, while maintaining a progressive drugs policy. In 2001 it became the world's first country to legalize same-sex marriage. The Dutch are outgoing, friendly and helpful and it is unlikely that while on Netherlands tours anyone stopped in the street and asked a question would not reply in perfect English. The people tend to view themselves as modest, independent and self-reliant.

Dutch Master Painters

When it comes to art, who would not be aware of its many well-known painters. The 17th century, in which the Dutch Republic was prosperous, was the age of the "Dutch Masters", such as Rembrandt van Rijn, Johannes Vermeer, Jan Steen, Jacob van Ruysdael and many others. Famous Dutch painters of the 19th and 20th century were Vincent van Gogh and Piet Mondrian. M. C. Escher is a well-known graphics artist. Willem de Kooning was born and trained in Rotterdam, although he is considered to have reached acclaim as an American artist.

One phenomenon is the number of bicycles that are used by local inhabitants. The country has embraced this form of transportation and everywhere you go on an Amsterdam vacation, you are conscious of bicycles being used for both commuting and for everyday use.  It is necessary to keep a third eye out for them as you walk along the streets.

What are the top cities to visit in the Netherlands?

The three major cities are Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam, all with their own unique characters. Amsterdam, of course, is known for its network of quaint and serene canals which traverse the city and its individual style of architecture. A very pleasant way to spend time here on an Amsterdam vacation is to simply meander along the canals and through the narrow side streets thronged with cafes, bars (known sometimes as “Brown Cafes”) and small boutique stores. The Amsterdam Stock Exchange, the oldest stock exchange in the world, is located in the city centre. Amsterdam's main attractions, including its historic canals, are the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum for contemporary art), the Hermitage Amsterdam, Anne Frank House, the Amsterdam Museum and its red-light district, strangely enough, a major tourist attraction (just to see!).

The Hague, easily reached by a local train, is the seat of government and is known for being the location of the International Criminal Court.  Close by is the resort of Scheveningen and Madurodam, the interesting site of the model miniature Dutch village. Rotterdam is the largest port in Europe and well worth a visit on Netherlands tours to view its interesting, modern architecture.

Other places of interest are Delft, known for its blue pottery and quaint canals and Alkmaar known for its cheese markets.

With its history and culture plus its unique landscapes, don’t take for granted the size of the country as an extended stay here will be very rewarding while on Netherlands vacations.
