Bergen, Norway’s second-largest city has been described as a large city with a small-town charm. It is not only a centre in itself but is also the most popular gateway to the Norwegian fjords as it is halfway between the Hardangerfjord and the Sognefjord. The city is surrounded by seven mountains and this backdrop adds to the beauty of being on the North Sea coast. Many of the suburbs are located on islands. Bergen, as a port, is Norway's busiest with over 300 cruise ship calls every year. On a Norway vacation, a stroll through the older parts of Bergen will take you back in time to the Middle Ages as much of the architecture has been preserved or rebuilt. One important accolade given to Bergen was that of being awarded the UNESCO title, the City of Gastronomy as it offers some excellent International cuisine.

Bergen is known for its street art. The famous and notorious British graffiti artist Banksy visited the city in 2000 and inspired many to start creating street art. The Bergen city council launched a plan of action for street art in Bergen afterwards to ensure that "Bergen will lead the fashion for street art as an expression both in Norway and Scandinavia”.

Bryggen is a neighbourhood of distinct wooden houses which were once burned down but enough survived causing Bryggen to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage site to enjoy on trips to Norway. If you walk down some of the alleyways, you really get a feel of what Bergen must have been like in centuries gone by. There is even a restaurant serving food and drinks in a building that first opened in 1708. The wooden alleyways of Bryggen have become home to artists and craftspeople and there are shops and boutiques everywhere selling their wares. The nearby Fish Market (Fisketorget) has a long history. It is worth a visit if only to see the types of fish being sold and perhaps to try a free sample.

On trips to Norway, another highlight in Bergen is the Floibanen funicular which travels from the centre of the city to the top of Mount Floyen where you can have a magnificent view of the city. At the top, there is the opportunity to walk or hike.

When it comes to museums, Bergen has a wide range in and around the city on a Norway vacation. The Bergen Art Museum is one of the largest in Scandinavia exhibiting art from the Renaissance to the contemporary. It contains several works by Edvard Munch. However, the Rasmus Meyer Collection of Edvard Munch is among the world's best. The Hanseatic Museum gives you a good introduction to Hanseatic Bergen in an authentic Hanseatic merchant's house from the early 1700s. It shows the contrast between the austere living and working conditions of the merchant sailors and the comfortable lifestyle of the merchants themselves. The Bryggens Museum gives a unique insight into Bryggen's architectural history. It contains the world's largest collection of medieval runic inscriptions. The Edvard Grieg house and museum are contained in a charming Swiss-style wooden villa in the suburbs of Bergen. Apart from being Grieg's original home, there is a modern exhibition centre, a 200-seat concert hall and a tiny, lakeside Composer's Hut where Grieg spent time composing. From June to mid-September, tours include a short piano concert.
