Malaga is a city, port and vacation resort on the Mediterranean coast in Southern Spain and the gateway to not only the Costa del Sol but also Andalusia on Spain holidays. This illustrious past has left its imprint on the historic centre of Malaga. The most significant testament to this is La Alcazaba, a fortress dating back to 1065 and now a fascinating archaeological museum. The nearby castle, rebuilt by the Moors and now a traditional Parador (state hotel) is also worth a visit if just for the breathtaking panoramic views. The beautiful park on Calle Alameda dates back to this era and has one of the most celebrated botanical collections in Europe. Open-air concerts are held here every Sunday during winter. Pablo Picasso is the city’s most famous son and there are several galleries showing his work including the 16th-century Museum of Fine Arts next to the Cathedral. Museo Picasso Malaga is a moving experience of Picasso’s lifetime of works and has become one of Malaga’s prime attractions. The museum is located in an old palace converted into an amazing art experience. The Museo Carmen Thyssen and Art Gallery are made up of the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection. This art gallery comprises some 2677 works from the collection and has a complete collection of different genres of Spanish Painters of the 19th century, an era defined chronologically between Francisco de Goya and Pablo Picasso giving particular emphasis to Andalusian art.
Malaga, as well as being a cultural capital, is a great place to eat out on a holiday in Spain. The Malaguenos love their food, and the bars and restaurants are where real social life takes place. The choice is limitless. Tapas, small portions of many different dishes, are an Andalusian tradition and a wonderfully inexpensive way to try a variety of local foods.
The area boasts one of the highest concentrations of world-class golf courses and is often nicknamed “The Costa del Golf”. Not too far away is Marbella’s Puerto Banus resort, both very trendy and chic. Nearby is the beautiful Alameda Gardens and just outside the city on the way to Antequera, one can discover the extensive botanical collection of Jardines de la Concepcion.
Not very far north of Malaga on a trip to Spain are three very attractive and historic cities. One is Cordoba. The old town contains numerous architectural reminders of when it was the capital during the Roman Empire’s occupation. Also, it has been estimated that in the 10th century Cordoba was the most populous city in the world. The historic centre has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Seville is the capital of the Andalusia region with an enormous amount to offer the visitor. The large River Guadalquivir lies on the western side of the city centre and this beautiful expanse of water provides the perfect place for a stroll. There are also scenic boat trips that start from the Torre del Oro. Across the River, Guadalquivir is various churches, monuments and neighbourhoods, all waiting to be discovered. Central Seville consists of an abundance of twisting streets and narrow lanes which add to the character of the city. Most public squares feel rather small and intimate. Grenada, while also a modern Christian town, is a Moorish town occupying Granada’s hills. It offers an intimate blend of art and history and has as its backdrop the snowy peaks of the Sierra Nevada. The Alhambra is without a doubt one of the world’s most spellbinding sights. With its fascinating architecture, sumptuous gardens and delightful water features, the Alhambra is the embodiment of refinement. Both a fortress and a royal city, this architectural masterpiece is considered one of the most beautiful and best-preserved Arab palaces ever built.
