The Balearic Islands lie off the south-east coast of Spain in the Mediterranean Sea and comprise Mallorca, Minorca, Ibiza and Formentera plus a number of minor islands. All four of the principal islands are very much geared to tourism but each has its own style and character on a Spain holiday.

Mallorca is the largest island and best known. What is special about this island is its diversity in landscapes and scenery in its 80-kilometre/50-mile length. The capital, Palma de Mallorca has historical and cultural attractions. Some of the architectural attractions are the cathedral with its spires and towers soaring over the town and the Almudaina Palace, originally a Moorish fortress then converted into a royal residence for the Catholic Monarchs in the 14th Century. Other highlights in the town are the old harbour with its lively Lonja Fish Market and the Plaza Mayor, the town's main square. However, there are some excellent beaches close to the town, Cala Mayor, Playa de Palma, and Playa del Arenal. Other beaches can be found along the island’s 550-kilometre/345-mile coastline with small coves set between cliffs and pine groves in the north of the island. Water sports such as scuba diving, windsurfing, fishing, sailing, and even surfing are available on a trip to Spain. The inland portion of Mallorca is truly scenic and in parts, is very mountainous. There are also a nature reserve, hiking trails and pretty villages such as Deia, Soller and Pollenca. One gem is the medieval walled town of Alcudia. There exudes much charm in its historic quarter with cobblestone streets, beautiful churches and quaint buildings. It is also known for its festivals and cultural events.

Ibiza has the reputation of being the “party island”. It is 40 kilometres/25 miles in length with 210 kilometres/130 miles of coastline. However, party-going is not everything Ibiza offers on a trip to Spain. Its crystal-clear waters are ideal for swimming. There are beaches of fine sand and those with sand dunes. It is important to know that Ibiza as an island has been designated UNESCO World Heritage recognition for its cultural attractions. Many different civilizations have lived in Ibiza over time. They include the Phoenician archaeological site of Sa Caleta, the necropolis of Puig des Molins and the historic old Eivissa, a quaint medieval village surrounded by immense fortifications built in the 16^th Century. Inside the village are narrow cobblestone streets and large historic houses. With regard to the fun part, Ibiza’s nightlife is world-renowned with its fashionable bars and nightclubs to be enjoyed on a trip to Spain.

Minorca is the place to go for peace and quiet. The island has 216 kilometres/127 miles of coastline with rugged shores to the north and golden sandy coves to the south, both with crystal-clear waters. It is an excellent place for sailing, windsurfing, water skiing and scuba diving. You can go here. Minorca's stunning seabed has been a favourite amongst diving enthusiasts for decades. Traveling inland is rewarding whether walking, on a bicycle or on horseback. There is an outstanding nature reserve at S’Albufera d'Es Grau, home to many aquatic and migratory birds and one of Southern Europe's most important wetland areas. There are a number of prehistoric sites dating back to 1400 BC to visit.on Spain holidays

Formentera is another island offering peace and tranquillity measuring 20 kilometres/12 miles in length. It has a rugged, unspoilt coastline with high cliffs towering over the excellent secluded beaches ideal for swimming and water sport such as Llevant and Illetes Beaches, some of Spain’s longest, whitest and least-crowded beaches. There is some nightlife but this is not Formentera’s priority for existing. It is a fabulous beach to enjoy on a trip to Spain.
