  • Enjoy your Vacations at Sweden: Malmo

Malmo is the third largest city in Sweden after Stockholm and Gothenburg. One of its major attractions on a Sweden vacation is Gamla Staden, Malmo’s old town with its historic buildings, a warren of cobblestone streets and half-timbered houses. The main square, Stortorget, dating back to 1540 and Sodergatan here are the main shopping areas of Malmo. The Kockska huset is a palace built in 1522 and consists of three buildings and is located in the northwest corner of Stortorget. Since the late 1990s, Malmo has seen a major development in cosmopolitan architecture. This includes the vibrant redeveloped waterfront of Vastra Hamnen. The futuristic twisted skyscraper Turning Torso has become a landmark here. Completed in 2005, it is the tallest building in Scandinavia. The surrounding seaside promenade, skateboard park, beach and restaurants attract locals and visitors. Gamla Vaster is a quiet and sophisticated part of town with lots of galleries, design shops and restaurants. This is also one of the oldest parts of Malmo and is recommended for viewing some of the city’s oldest architecture. Mollevangstorget has a bustling open-air market on weekends. The surrounding neighborhood is full of inexpensive Asian and Middle Eastern shops, restaurants and grocery stores catering to the alternative side of the city. It is popular among locals for its relatively inexpensive nightlife, moderately priced bars, and restaurants.

One very prominent feature of Malmo is the Oresund Bridge which connects Malmo in Sweden with Copenhagen in Denmark. It is the longest cable-tied road and rail bridge in Europe, measuring 8 kilometres/5 miles.

Malmo's oldest building is Sankt Petri Church, built in the early 14th Century with flying buttresses spanning its arches. Dating back to the 15th Century, the Malmohus Slott is a castle and was one of the most important fortresses in Sweden. The Knight’s Hall contains various late-medieval and Renaissance exhibits and the northwest cannon tower has exhibits of cannons and armour. There is also a magnificent collection of more than 130 mature trees worldwide. Malmo's only casino is within the park's bounds.

Located within the Malmohus Slott, is the Malmo Museer, three museums within a museum: the Malmo Konstmuseum (art gallery), Stadsmuseum (city museum) and a large Aquarium complete with everything from bats to electric eels. The Technology Museum in Malmo is devoted to transport, in particular aviation. Exhibited is a 1943 Swedish U3 submarine.
