On Switzerland vacations, Geneva is the second largest city in Switzerland located in the French-speaking part of the country. It is situated where the Rhone River exits into Lake Geneva. It is well known as the European headquarters of the United Nations. Several other International agencies are headquartered in Geneva including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Geneva is a global city, a financial center, and a worldwide centre for diplomacy due to the presence of numerous international organizations. There are 82 buildings or sites in Geneva that are listed as Swiss heritage sites of national significance.

One of the most interesting sights in the city on trips to Switzerland is the Jet d’Eau (Water-Jet), a large fountain and one of the city's most famous landmarks. It is one of the largest fountains in the world situated at the point where Lake Geneva empties into the Rhone River. It is visible throughout the city and is illuminated at night.

Another major landmark is the Palace of Nations (Palais des Nations) built between 1929 and 1936 to serve as the headquarters of the League of Nations. It has served as the home of the United Nations Office since 1946. In 2012 alone, the Palace of Nations hosted more than 10,000 intergovernmental meetings.

The Old Town is a picturesque section of Geneva with its cobblestone streets, historic buildings, sidewalk cafes and restaurants. Among the highlights of Switzerland, tours are the City Hall which is close to Rousseau's birth house and various antique shops with all sorts of interesting items in their window. Another highlight is that St. Pierre Cathedral is a Reformed Protestant church and is best known as the adopted home church of John Calvin, one of the leaders of the Protestant Reformation. Inside the church is a wooden chair used by Calvin. The area beneath the Cathedral has recently been excavated extensively revealing a rich history of the site dating back to the time of the Roman Empire. Also fascinating is the Quartier des Grottes, an area with interesting shops and a series of residential buildings called "Les Schtroumpfs" where the architects tried to avoid all straight lines leading to an unconventional Gaudi-like  (famous and unique  Spanish architect) appearance. The Old Town can be seen from all around Geneva as it is perched on a hilltop.

Some interesting museums in Geneva while on Switzerland vacations include the International Museum of the Red Cross which is divided into three parts, Defending Human Dignity, Restoring Family Links and Reducing Natural Risks and the Watch Museum (Musee International de l’Horlogerie) which offers everything to do with watches and clocks from sundials and other pre-mechanical devices via centuries of clockwork innovations to present day electronics.

A pleasant excursion on trips to Switzerland is to Mount Saleve which is actually in close-by France. The cable car takes visitors to a height of 1100 metres/360 feet in less than five minutes offering outstanding views across the city and Lake Geneva, the Alps, the Jura and Mont Blanc.

Another pleasant way to spend time in Geneva is to take a cruise on the beautiful Lake Geneva with its attractive panoramic scenery.
