Our Wales Tours
Wales is rich in history and natural beauty with its beautiful landscapes. This includes mountains, coastline and beautiful national parks. There are also a number of outstanding and imposing castles. Wales is often referred to as "the land of song". The principal Welsh festival of music and poetry is the annual National Eisteddfod which takes place in Llangollen in central Wales and which provides an opportunity for singers and musicians from all over the world to perform there.
Wales Vacation Highlights
Some of Wales' most important scenery can be found within its National Parks. There are three main National Parks, Snowdonia National Park in North Wales which includes Wales’ highest mountain, Snowdon. Brecon Beacons National Park in Central Wales which offers spectacular mountain scenery and castles and finally Pembrokeshire Coast National Park in South Wales has stunning coastal scenery.
Cardiff is the capital of Wales and is a lively and modern city. It hosts large festivals with alfresco dining and drinking becoming popular due to large pedestrian-only areas. Cardiff has a reputation as a city of castles, having five different castles within its surroundings.
The Castles of Wales
Cardiff Castle, an important attraction on a Wales vacation, is situated in beautiful parklands in the heart of the city. Once a Roman fort dating back to 50 AD, the remains of the wall are still in existence. The building today was built by Norman invaders in the 11th Century. Each room in the castle has its own special theme including Mediterranean gardens and Italian and Arabian decorations.
Conwy Castle is a mediaeval fort located on the north coast of Wales. It was built between 1283 and 1289 AD. This castle played an important part in several wars. UNESCO considers Conwy Castle one of "the finest examples of late 13th Century and early 14th Century military architecture in Europe”. The views from the battlements are breathtaking as they look out across the mountains and the sea.
Caernarfon Castle (also known as Carnarvon Castle) is a mediaeval fortress in northwest Wales. While the castle was under construction, town walls were built around Caernarfon. The investiture of the Prince of Wales, HRH Prince Charles took place here.
Pembroke Castle is another mediaeval castle located in Pembrokeshire in West Wales. It was run down until it was restored in the early part of the 20th Century and is now one of the best-preserved mediaeval castles and well worth visiting on Wales vacations. You can walk on sections of the wall for views of the surrounding countryside.
Snowdonia
Snowdonia is a mountainous region in northwest Wales and also a large national park. The name for the area comes from Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales at 1085 metres/3560 feet. The Snowdon Mountain Railway runs up to the summit. There are some spectacular walks in Snowdonia on the lower-level mountains. The park has an amazing 2380 kilometres/1480 miles of public footpaths. Llanberis, a village at the foot of Snowdon, is a popular centre for outdoor activities on a Wales vacation including walking, mountaineering, climbing, mountain biking and pony trekking.
Brecon Beacons National Park
The Brecon Beacons are a range of dramatic mountains and hills in South Wales which make up the Brecon Beacons National Park which contains some of the most beautiful scenery in southern Wales consisting of mountain plateaus of grass and heather, wooded, valleys with waterfalls and green, rural landscapes. There are four distinct regions within the park. There is the wild, Black Mountain with its high moors and glacial lakes. There is, also Fforest Fawr with its rushing streams and spectacular waterfalls. There are several mediaeval castles, one is Carreg Cennen Castle which is perched on top of a craggy hill. The park is perfect for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, rock climbing, camping and fishing. A special walk is along Beacons Way, 161 kilometres/100 miles in length.
Pembrokeshire Coastal National Park
The Pembrokeshire coast is a wild and dramatic place, great for wildlife, water sports and walking on a Wales vacation. It is the only National Park in the United Kingdom which has been designated as such mainly due to its spectacular coastline. The landscape varies with rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, wooded estuaries and wild inland hills. Not all of the park is coastal. There are forests and marshes on the edges of the park. The Pembrokeshire Coast Path is a designated National Trail and is 300 kilometres/186 miles long, travelling mainly along the cliff-tops.
Llangollen
Every July since 1947, this town has hosted the International Musical Eisteddfod where over 300,000 competitors from over 100 different countries have performed taking part in concerts, competitions and workshops which involve singing and dancing. This one-week event attracts more than five thousand singers, dancers and instrumentalists from around 50 different nations. The Gala concerts have attracted some of the biggest names which include Luciano Pavarotti, Dame Shirley Bassey, Bryn Terfel, Kiri Te Kanawa, and the Red Army Ensemble. A Fringe Festival is also held around the same time and includes performances of music, comedy and dance.
Portmeirion
Portmeirion, situated on the northwest coast of Wales, is famous for being a replica in miniature of a picturesque Italian village, the brainchild of Sir Clough Williams-Ellis (1884-1978) who wanted to recreate an Italian village in Wales. Portmeirion is located on a promontory. There is a hotel in the village which was formerly a mansion owned by the creator. There are also shops, restaurants, gardens, and beaches.
Hay-on-Wye
Hay-on-Wye is located on the border with England in southeast Wales. It is a small, pretty market town and is known for its literary associations. It has been called “The Town of Books” and is the National Book Town of Wales. It is said that there are possibly as many books in bookstores as people in the town. A major literary festival is held annually called the Hay Festival. It attracts thousands of visitors over a 10-day period at the beginning of June and brings together well-known writers from around the world to discuss and share their stories. Other attractions in and around Hay-on-Wye are the Thursday Market, a fortress and castle which dates back to the 12th Century AD and the nearby countryside which is perfect for short and long scenic walks on a Wales vacation.

When is the best time to visit Wales?
The weather in Wales can be unpredictable which is to be expected from an island nation like the UK, It is naturally influenced by its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, but you can forget the popular myth that it rains all the time. There are no extremes of weather as it is firmly within a temperate zone. Perhaps the nicest time scenically is in the spring (late March to early June) as well as the fall (September and October). These times are usually warm and dry with blossoms in the spring and colours in the fall. The summer (late June to the end of August) is, naturally, a busy period. Winter can be on the cold side but it has been known for daffodils to appear as early as late February. Expect snow on high ground in places such as the Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia. The west of the country tends to experience more rain than the east.
