The nickname “Mile High City” seems to be as much about Denver’s ambition as its geography. Since the days of the Old West, Colorado’s capital has been a city on the move. From the first prospectors to the young creatives that flock here to make their name, nobody comes to Denver to relax. With the Rocky Mountains right on your doorstep and 300 days of sunshine a year, it’s hard not to feel energized in the Mile High City.
If you’re not sure where to begin your Denver adventure, soak up Colorado’s story to your heart’s content at the History Colorado Center. This highly interactive museum is part of the Golden Triangle, Denver’s main cultural precinct. The district sprawls out in the shadow of the Colorado State Capitol, where you can take a free tour including views from the dome, and snap a photo at the official (though inaccurate) mile-high mark. Titanic buffs will want to opt for a tour of the Molly Brown House Museum, the 19th-century former home of arguably the ship’s most famous survivor.
Art lovers will find a mountainous haven in Denver. The Golden Triangle also holds the expansive Denver Art Museum, the Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art, and the Clyfford Still Museum, along with dozens of small galleries showcasing local and contemporary artists. You’ll find even more along Santa Fe Drive, a grassroots art district where you can explore thriving small galleries, and meet some of the artists.
Another great Denver attraction hub, particularly for families, is City Park. Denver Museum of Nature & Science and Denver Zoo respectively showcase prehistoric and living creatures from around the world. Denver is also famous for its Botanical Gardens. If your idea of outdoor exploration is a bit more urban, take a walking tour encompassing Denver’s much-loved street art, or shuttle (for free) between shopping stops along downtown’s 16th Street Mall.
Denver’s creativity also nurtures a fantastic food scene. You can visit local institutions such as Buckhorn Exchange, the city’s oldest restaurant and steakhouse, dating back to 1893. Equally iconic is the beloved downtown diner, Sam’s No. 3, while Charlie Brown’s has been serving up classic meals and sing-a-longs since Prohibition. Things get a little more modern with cutting-edge eats in revitalized neighbourhoods such as Five Points/RiNo, and LODO, right near Denver’s historic Union Station. Craft beer is also a big deal in Denver, with over 140 breweries competing for your taste buds. Just be sure to take the locals’ advice and go slow if you’re not used to drinking at high altitudes.
Speaking of altitude, no visit to Denver is complete without at least reaching the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. A visit to Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre is a must-do, even if you don’t have a chance to catch a show there. You can also pay your respects to an icon of the American West at the Buffalo Bill Museum and Gravesite, looking out over energetic Denver on one side, and the magnificent Rockies on the other.
