Phoenix Tours, Vacation Packages & Travel Experiences

  • Phoenix is the centre of the multicity "Valley of the Sun" area

There’s plenty to inspire the imagination in Arizona. In its capital and largest city, Phoenix, that inspiration manifests in several of America’s top art galleries, some of its most unique museums, and a range of gardens and hikes offering a taste of all that draws people to the state’s magnificent red rocks and deserts. If you prefer to round out sightseeing with a round of golf, there’s no better region in the United States in which to do it. Whether Phoenix is your springboard to a desert adventure or a city break in its own right, there’s plenty of reason to check out what the big city means in Arizona.

While nothing natural in Phoenix beats the beauty of the surrounding state, you can whet your appetite while learning about Arizona’s ecosystem at the Desert Botanical Garden, with five different trails to explore. One trail you should definitely follow in Papago Park takes you up to the Hole in the Rock for superb views over Phoenix. You can also linger here and visit the Phoenix Zoo, an enormous non-profit zoo, with over 2.5 miles of walking trails and almost 400 species. The Hole in the Rock is an easy climb, so if you’re looking for a greater challenge, tackle the Echo Canyon Trail on Camelback Mountain.

Art lovers flock to nearby Sedona to explore its galleries, but a real Arizona art adventure begins in Phoenix. The Phoenix Art Museum is a great place to start, with over 18,000 works in its collection, spanning every continent and era, in a gorgeous ultramodern building. For something a little more specialized, explore the Heard Museum, devoted to showcasing and advancing Native American art.

Phoenix also has some of America’s most popular niche museums, most notably the Musical Instrument Museum, the only one of its kind in the USA, with over 6,000 instruments in its collection, including John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ piano. Of course, there are also live shows at the museum’s onsite theatre. The Hall of Flame Museum of Firefighting invites you to learn all about the history of this essential service in one of the hottest regions and driest in North America.

If architectural gems ping your radar, Phoenix offers a handful of memorable homes, ranging from the quirky to the exquisite. The so-called Mystery Castle is the hand-built creation of Boyce Luther Gulley, who built it for his daughter Mary Lou in the 1930s. Today, the castle, complete with a chapel and dungeon, offers tours and is one of Phoenix’s favourite buildings. Another is Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West, which the architect described as “a look over the rim of the world.”

As much fun as Phoenix is to explore outside, it benefits from having those great indoor attractions to visit on its hottest days. Whether you’re hiking, golfing, or just sightseeing, bottled water, a hat, and sunscreen are your friends, even in the cooler winter months. Come prepared, stay hydrated, and enjoy all this city in the sun has to offer.
