The focus of Goway’s East Coast is on New York State, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and the United States capital Washington. The historic significance of the area is huge, led by Philadelphia and Washington, while New York played a crucial role from an immigration point of view as well as a centre of cultural, artistic, and commercial development.

New York City is undeniably the state's most popular tourist destination, rightly known as the city that never sleeps and packed with famous attractions, as well as an impressive culinary and theatre scene. But leaving the city opens opportunities to explore captivating scenery and other attractions. You can visit beautiful lakes and mountains in Upstate New York, such as the Hamptons or Finger Lakes State Park, which has a reputation for leaving visitors spellbound. The park’s Gorge Trail winds over and under spectacular waterfalls while the Seneca Lake Wine Trail follows along the sapphire waters of the lake itself. Then there’s Lake Placid which has hosted the winter Olympics twice, the beautiful lakes and forest-covered hills of the Adirondacks, the rugged countryside of the Catskills and, of course, the beauty and dramatic power of Niagara Falls. Unique towns like Corning, with its internationally renowned museum where you can see more than 3,500 years of history displayed in its Glass Collection Galleries, the National Baseball Hall of fame in Cooperstown and the George Eastman House and the International Museum of Photography and Film in Rochester are just some of the attractions well worth visiting.

Pennsylvania is, of course, best known for its role in building the foundations of the United States of America with Philadelphia’s Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell among the key attractions. The Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were written here, as was the Gettysburg Address, the most important speech delivered during the Civil War. The Gettysburg battlefield is one of the highlights away from the capital, together with Pennsylvania Dutch country, home of the unique Amish culture. Chocolate lovers will want to visit Hershey Park, while the resorts of the Poconos, surrounded by lovely lakes and forests offer wonderful romantic getaways. Pittsburgh is known for the cultural legacy of the Carnegie family and has an Andy Warhol Museum, while Fallingwater, in Mill Run, is one of the most famous buildings designed by world-famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

New Jersey is one of the smallest states, but full of surprises. Its top attraction should be the Statue of Liberty, on Liberty Island and Ellis Island as both are within New Jersey Waters. However, both fall under the territorial jurisdiction of New York state. That makes Atlantic City’s famous Boardwalk the top draw. A carnival-style amusement park with an iconic Steel Pier, it offers unique shopping experiences, ranging from luxury names like Louis Vuitton to Salt Water Taffy, allegedly the world’s best candy. You also need to check out Princeton University and Princeton Battlefield State Park, as well as the US Navy's most decorated vessel, the mammoth USS New Jersey, now an excellent floating museum moored on the Delaware River.

Wrapped around the huge Chesapeake Bay, which almost divides it in half, Maryland lies at the heart of another huge piece of American history. It saw plenty of action in the Revolution, the War of 1812, as well as the Civil War. The town of Annapolis, home to William Paca House, is of note because it was the United States capital once, although for a short time only. William Paca, meanwhile, was the gentleman who signed the Declaration of Independence. Long beaches, precious wetlands for waterfowl and migrating birds and the gorgeous Appalachian Mountains crossing the state in the west provide Maryland with riveting scenery while a must-see for Civil War buffs is the battlefield of Antietam, where the deadliest one-day battle in American military history was fought.

Finally, no visit to the East Coast is complete without Washington. An orderly arrangement of wide tree-lined avenues, all with captivating vistas, leads to powerful focal points and wonderful open public spaces. The most important of these is Pennsylvania Avenue, connecting two iconic buildings: the White House and the United States Capitol with its impressive dome. Many of the things to see and do are located along the National Mall and are best seen on foot. They include the Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, and the Smithsonian's complex of museums, an incredible repository for the nation's historic treasures. The restaurant scene in town is excellent, especially in the lively Georgetown area of Washington where some of the best chefs vie for your attention.
