Nestled between the Mediterranean and the Sahara, Tunisia is an ancient land full of archaeological treasures, and one of Europe’s favourite beach getaways. Experience both on a 8 day introduction to this beautiful country.
Just outside Tunis, visit the Punic city of Carthage, home of the legendary General Hannibal. When the Romans razed the city in 146BC, it brought an end to a flourishing trade empire. Today’s Carthage is an affluent suburb, and the ruins are a major tourist attraction. A visit here will be the highlight of a day that also includes the Bardo Museum and the picturesque village of Sidi Bou Said.
The holy city of Kairouan is considered the fourth most important pilgrimage city in Islam, after Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem. Pilgrims and non-pilgrims alike flock to the Great Mosque of Sidi-Uqba, which dates back to 670AD. You’ll also visit the Berber Mausoleum. After your tour, continue on to Tozeur, a large oasis in the desert famous for its date exports.
The gateway to the Sahara, Douz lays across the salt desert of Chott El Jerid. A trip through the dunes here is a quintessential Tunisia experience. You’ll have the option of a camel ride as well. Visit the nearby Berber-speaking community of Matmata. Star Wars fans may recognize its distinctive underground troglodyte structures, used as a location for the film. Some of the locals still call them home today.
Explore the souks of Houmt Suq and the Medina of Sfax. You’ll also stop at Gabes, an oasis known for its spice market. Finally, stop in at the Coliseum of El Jem, Africa’s most impressive Roman ruin, second only in size to its counterpart in Rome.

Depart for Kairouan where you'll have the opportunity to visit the Grand Mosque and Berber Mausoleum. After lunch in a local restaurant in Kairoun, travel to Tozeur and marvel at its 250-acre palm grove that produces some of the finest dates in Tunisia. Continue to the Medina of Tozeur and the Ecomuseum "EDEN PALM", where you'll discover the region's handcrafts and a boutique of passteries to taste cake made with dates of the region.

Tozeur - Oasis Mountains - Chott El Jerid - Douz
An abundant natural water supply has made Tozeur a richly inhabited oasis. Enjoy a tour of the town followed by lunch. Stops are made at the Tamerza Canyon waterfall as well as at the mountainous oases of Chebika and Mides. In the afternoon cross the Chott El Jerid salt desert to Douz, known as the 'Gateway to the Sahara'. An optional highlight is a camel ride at sunset (for your own account).

Continue your journey to Monastir to visit the Ribat, the most prominent monument of the city. Next, you'll make your way to Sousse for a visit to the mosaics museum and lunch at local restaurant.
