Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland and is located in the north-central German-speaking part of the country. It is also located at the northern tip of Lake Zurich. Zurich is one of the world’s largest financial centres and home to a large number of important banking giants. However, it is also a city with a long history and boasts many museums (approximately 50) and art galleries (approximately 100) to be enjoyed on Switzerland vacations. Zurich is ideally situated only 30 kilometres/18 miles from the Alps. 

Most of Zürich's major sites are located within the area on either side of the Limmat River. Zurich’s Old Town (Altstadt) contains medieval houses, twisting, narrow lanes and guild halls and town halls from the Renaissance period. It is a living history and is where most of the churches and interesting old buildings are to be found on trips to Switzerland as well as the most expensive stores on the famous Bahnhofstrasse. 

The Lindenhof District is a part of the Old Town. It is the oldest area of the city with settlement traces dating to pre-Roman times. Nearby Lindenhof Hill is the site of a Roman castle. The hilltop area including its prehistoric, Roman and Medieval remains is listed as a Swiss heritage site of national significance.

Some of the highlights of the city on Switzerland tours include the Zurich Opera House, one of Europe’s major opera houses dating back to 1834. It is an ornate edifice built in the neo-classical style. The Schauspielhaus is a theatre complex and one of the most important theatres in the German-speaking world.

The Grossmunster is an interesting Romanesque-style Protestant church and one of the three major churches in the city. Construction of the present structure commenced around 1100 AD. The Swiss National Museum, known locally as the Landesmuseum, is one of the most important art museums of cultural history in Europe. The museum building has become one of the main sights in the Old City. Its collections include artifacts ranging from ancient times, through the Middle Ages to the 20th Century. Classic modern art and art of the 16th, 17th and 18th Centuries are to be found in the Kunsthaus Museum.

Something to consider while staying in Zurich on a Switzerland vacation is to take a cruise on Lake Zurich which can last from 1.5 hours to 4 hours. The lake’s scenic backdrop makes this a worthwhile excursion. The Polybahn is a funicular railway which starts in the centre of the city and is one of two funiculars within Zürich carrying passengers up to a terrace from which one has excellent views of the city and the lake.  

The Uetliberg is a mountain close to Zurich which also offers panoramic views of the entire city of Zurich and Lake Zurich. The summit is easily accessible by train from Zurich on trips to Switzerland.
