Christchurch: Essence of New Zealand: Premier Escorted Vacation

Duration
20 Days
Prices From:
AU$ 11,468

FIRST-CLASS | ESCORTED COACH TOURING: Discover the best of New Zealand from Christchurch to Auckland on this brisk, first class coach tour that includes the Fiordlands, adventure-loving Queenstown, glacier country, the Marlborough wine region, Rotorua, the Bay of Islands, and more.

Embark on a 20-day journey through New Zealand, exploring the dramatic landscapes of the South Island before immersing yourself in the cultural richness of the North.

Touch down in Christchurch for one night, where an evening heritage tram ride with drinks and canapes gives you a taste of an historic city reinventing itself as a culinary and artistic hub. Then spend a night in Aoraki Mt Cook National Park, exploring the shores of Lake Tekapo and the sights surrounding Oceania’s highest peak, capped off with an astronomer-guided stargazing session. Your next destination is the university town of Dunedin, where you’ll have a choice of sightseeing activities, including a Speight’s Brewery visit, a tour of (allegedly haunted) Larnach Castle, or Olveston Historic Home.

Your next stop is Te Anau, gateway to the awe-inspiring Fiordlands National Park. With two nights here, a cruise on Milford Sound is included, though you’ll also enjoy your choice between a visit to the remarkable glow worm caves, a cruise on less visited Doubtful Sound, a fjord rich with marine life, or a heart-pumping jetboat ride on the Upper Waiau River. Then it’s on to three nights in Queenstown, the renowned adventure capital of New Zealand, where your choice of activities includes 4WD touring, zip-lining, touring the surrounding wine region, or taking a leisurely cruise on Lake Wakatipu.

On the other side of Haast Pass (take note, Lord of the Rings fans), enter glacier country, bound for Franz Josef. Enjoy a four-course dinner at your eco lodge after some time to explore. A trip on the spectacular TranzAlpine train returns you to Christchurch for one more night before following the east coast to Blenheim. The two main attractions here are the spectacular Marlborough Sounds, and New Zealand’s most renowned wine country, particularly known for its sauvignon blancs. Spend a day exploring whichever one interests you more before boarding your Cook Strait ferry for Wellington.

Take in the city sights of New Zealand’s capital before driving through the Rimutaka Ranges to Napier, where an Art Deco tour familiarises you with the architecture the city is famed for. After a quick stop in Taupo, spend two nights in Rotorua, a major centre of Maori culture, where a traditional Hangi feast and performance awaits you. Rotorua is also famous for its Te Puia Thermal Reserve, home to bubbling mud pools and spouting geysers that embody geothermal New Zealand. Your other sightseeing options include the Agrodome, where you can see a sheep herding demonstration, and a tour of the Hobbiton movie set.

Your journey ends in New Zealand’s largest city, Auckland, where you’ll have the option to go behind the scenes at Oscar-winning Weta Workshop. You might also opt for a cruise on Waitemata Harbour, enjoy a rugby experience with the All Blacks, meet the unique fauna of New Zealand at Auckland Zoo, or embark on a rainforest journey to see why Auckland loves the outdoors. Before flying home however, you’ll push further north still, staying two nights at the Bay of Islands, one of New Zealand’s most historic and beautiful spots. Return to Auckland for your onward journey.
