India Tours, Vacation Packages & Travel Experiences

  • The fabulous Taj Mahal - a popular site to be seen on all India tours.
  • The bright colors of an Indian market
  • Blue city of Jodhpur with Mehrangharh Fort
  • The elusive tiger in Ranthambhore National Park
  • The riverbanks in the holy city of Varanasi
  • Take an incredible hot air balloon ride in Jaipur

It is said India is experienced as much by the senses as well as the eye. There is no doubt that it is one of the most colourful and dynamic destinations in the world where one should expect the unexpected. It has so much variety on India tours be it the geography, the culture or the people themselves.

Why Consider an India Vacation?

Attractions on a trip to India include snow-capped mountains, dense jungles, arid deserts, sandy beaches, animal sanctuaries, interesting backwaters, cool hill stations, fascinating urban cities and lush countryside plus other iconic Indian attractions such as temples, palaces, forts, tea plantations and Bollywood. For the shopper, while on an India vacation, the following are excellent purchases – wood carvings, marble and stone carvings, silk products, jewellery and paintings. And then there is the food. In India, you can enjoy the best curries and other typical dishes to your heart’s content. Should you not be inclined to have this as a regular diet, there is a good selection of International cuisine available.

Top Cities to Visit on an India Vacation

Delhi

India’s capital city has many attractions. The historic Red Fort constructed in 1639 was the principal residence of the emperors of the Mughal dynasty for nearly 200 years. It is made of red sandstone and measures 3 kilometres/2 miles around its perimeter. It now houses a number of museums and a treasure trove of buildings such as the Drum House, the Hall of Public Audiences, the white marble Hall of Private Audiences, the Pearl Mosque, the Royal Baths and the Palace of Colour. Humayan’s Tomb was built in the mid 16th Century and is considered to have inspired the Taj Mahal. It is one of the best examples of Mughal architecture on a trip to India. From the 17th to the 19th Centuries, the garden was gradually filled with the tombs of Emperor Humayun’s descendants and his entourage. Several other Mughal emperors are buried inside Humayun’s own mausoleum.

Chandni Chowk is one of the oldest and busiest markets in Old Delhi. Its speciality is its variety of merchandise and other commodities such as food, books, clothing, electronic and consumer goods, shoes and leather goods. On India tours, you can buy curios and souvenirs. Even if not shopping here, it is a sight worth seeing and is a typical example of hectic and lively everyday Indian activity. New Delhi refers to a larger part of the city which contains the Secretariat Building, Parliament, Connaught Place, Lodhi Gardens and India Gate. Another highlight is the Qutub Minar, the tallest tower in India and made of sandstone.

Agra

No one can visit India without seeing the Taj Mahal. It is a tribute to love and beauty and is easily the most important building on an India vacation. It was built between 1631 and 1648 by Emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife who died giving birth. It took 22 years and 20,000 workmen to complete. It is regarded by many as the best example of Mughal architecture and is carved out of white marble.  The semi-precious inlaid stones reflect the glow of the moon. It is on a full moon night that the silvery brilliance of the Taj Mahal is shown. Dawn and dusk are especially attractive times to view the Taj on India tours. It is not a palace or a temple or a mosque. It is simply a monument which houses the tombs of Shah Jahan and his wife. The Taj Mahal is surrounded by landscaped formal gardens.

Jaipur

Jaipur is known as the “Pink City” because of the colour of many of its buildings.  It is a mixture of old and new. It is famous for its City Palace, a complex of royal buildings that still serves as the residence for the Maharaja, although several of the buildings are now museums. The Amber Fort is situated on a hill just outside of Jaipur and is reached from below on foot or more easily on the back of an elephant or in a jeep. The palace was the residence of the Rajput Maharajas and their families. The main palace complex is divided into four main sections, each with its own courtyard. There are a number of rooms with artefacts from the past as well as a perfectly landscaped garden. Built in 1799, the Hawa Mahal, also known as the Palace of Winds, is one of the Jaipur’s major landmarks on trips to India although it is actually little more than a facade. This five-storey building which looks out over the main street of the old city is a stunning example of Rajput artistry with its 953 pink, delicately honeycombed sandstone windows. It was originally built to allow the women of the royal household to watch the everyday life and processions in Jaipur.

Close to Jaipur is the Ranthambore National Park. The park was once the private game preserve of Jaipur’s royal family. Today, its rolling hills and plains are the prowling grounds of 60 wild tigers. Even if you miss capturing a photo of a tiger, the palace ruins nestled in the grasslands make for dramatic photo subjects.

Mumbai

Mumbai embodies the pulse and chaos of modern India. The Gateway of India is an arch monument which was built to commemorate the landing of King George V and Queen Mary on their visit to India in 1911. It was later used as a symbolic ceremonial entrance to India for Viceroys and the new Governors of Mumbai. It is located on the waterfront and serves as a memento of British Colonial rule over India. Mani Bhavan was Mahatma Gandhi's Mumbai home and headquarters for around 17 years from 1917 to 1934. Today, it is open to visitors. Inside is a library and Gandhi's pictures depicting his life and a gallery with photographs from his childhood up to his assassination, along with press clippings. The municipal Dhobi Ghat, the world’s largest outdoor laundromat, never fails to amaze tourists on India tours. Chowpatty Beach, with its carnival flair, is a favourite with Mumbai residents and visitors alike.

Jodhpur

The Mehrangarh Fort here, built around 1460, is perched on a high hill and is the most remarkable and magnificent fort in Rajasthan as well as being one of the largest forts in India. Inside, there are several palaces known for their intricate carvings and expansive courtyards. The museum in the Mehrangarh Fort is one of the best museums in Rajasthan.

Udaipur

Udaipur is arguably one of India’s most beautiful cities with fantastic palaces and lakes. Despite its size, Udaipur retains a romantic small-town charm. The Lake Palace, a luxury hotel in the middle of Lake Pichola is unique as are the city’s five gates, especially the Sun Gate to the east, and Moon Gate to the west. The 15th-century Ranakpur Jain Temple is an architectural marvel of ancient India.

Varanasi

Varanasi, also known as Benares, is a holy city whose name means “City of Light.” Religious life here centres on the Ganges River and the best way to experience its rituals on an India vacation is with a dawn or sunset boat ride. In a city known for ghats, the most spectacular by far is the Dashashwamedh Ghat near the Vishwanath Temple, where each evening, a group of priests gather to perform Ganga Aarti. Ghats are riverfront steps leading to the banks of the River Ganges. Varanasi has 88 Ghats. Most of the Ghats are for bathing and ceremonies while two Ghats are used exclusively as cremation sites.

The Backwaters of Kerala

The Backwaters of Kerala is a network of 1500 kilometres/900 miles of canals, both man-made and natural, 38 rivers and 5 large lakes which extend from one end of Kerala to the other. The Backwaters can be explored by renting a boat for one or several days on India trips. If you sail for more than a day, the boat usually comes with a navigator and a cook. Boats vary in style and run to luxurious houseboats. The Backwaters is known for its natural beauty. Another attraction is the views of everyday life as you sail by typical, authentic local villages.

Khajuraho

This is a group of Hindu and Jain temples and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temples are famous for their architectural symbolism and their erotic sculptures. Most of them were constructed between 950 and 1050 AD. Originally, there were 85 temples. However, today, there are only 25 which have survived. What really makes the temples special are the numerous erotic carvings both inside and outside the temples that depict men, women, and even animals engaging in lovemaking, orgies, and bestiality under the benign smiles of divinities.

Cochin

Cochin (now known as Kochi) in the state of Kerala is a fairly laid-back city with a certain charm to be experienced on an India vacation. It is also a major port. Known as “The Queen of the Arabian Sea”, Cochin was an important spice trading centre and was a Portuguese colony for many years. There are many unique features about Cochin including the giant-size cantilevered Chinese-style fishing nets attached to fishing boats in the harbour (very much-photographed) and the very tiny synagogue in the centre which has a congregation of a handful of Jews emanating from the Sephardic Jews from Spain. Adjacent to it is the Mattancherry Palace, originally built in the 16th century, combining European and Kerala architectural styles. The St. Francis Church, constructed in 1503 by Portuguese friars, is said to be India’s oldest European-built church. The famous Portuguese explorer, Vasco da Gama, who died in Cochin, was buried here before his remains were taken to Lisbon.

Chennai

Formerly known as Madras, Chennai is the largest city in southern India. Although a busy and noisy city, there are certain attractions well worth visiting. The Kapaleeswarer Temple is one of Chennai’s oldest temples dating back to the 8th Century. The San Thome Church is one of 3 built over a tomb of one of the Apostles of Christ. This one is built over the tomb of St. Thomas who, at one time, came to India. Another religious building of significance is the Big Mosque which is architecturally imposing with extensive grounds that contain the tombs of several Islamic scholars. For culture buffs on an India vacation, the Government Museum of Chennai consists of 46 galleries featuring everything from archaeology to zoology.  Mahabalipuram is 60 kilometres/38 miles south of Chennai and is home to several temples from the 7th and 8th Centuries AD which are UNESCO World Heritage sites. One is known as the Shore Temple. The structural design has been called “poetry in stone.”

Some unmissable sights and attractions on an India Trip

Jim Corbett National Park

The Jim Corbett National Park is the oldest national park in India and was established to protect the endangered Bengal tiger. Visitation is only allowed in selected areas of Corbett Tiger Reserve so that people get an opportunity to see its beautiful landscape and the diverse wildlife on trips to India. There are around 50 species of mammals, 580 bird species and 25 reptile species. Bengal tigers, although plentiful, are not easily spotted due to the foliage which provides camouflage in the reserve. Leopards are found in hilly areas but may also venture into the lowland jungles. In the summer, Indian elephants can be seen in herds of several hundred.

Ajanta and Ellora Caves

The Ajanta Caves are 29 rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments which date from the 2nd Century BC to about 480 AD near Aurangabad. The caves include paintings and rock-cut sculptures of Buddhist deities described as among the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian art. The caves also present paintings depicting the past lives and rebirths of the Buddha. The Ellora Caves contain Hindu, Jain as well as Buddhist caves dating from a period similar to Ajanta. Ellora is one of the largest rock-cut monastery-temple cave complexes in the world featuring Buddhist, Hindu and Jain monuments, with artwork, dating from 600 to 1000 BC. There are over 100 caves at the site, 34 of which are open to the public.

Goa

Goa offers dual attractions to the visitor on a trip to India. It is famous for its excellent beautiful beaches and resorts which make it an ideal stopover after visiting other parts of India. However, formerly a Portuguese colony, Goa has a long history and includes a blend of Portuguese, Indian, and Islamic architecture in its temples, houses, and buildings. Goa attracts many artists and painters and offers many art galleries and museums to visit on Indian travel.

Best Time to visit India

India’s weather is extremely varied depending on which part of the country you are heading to. The most influential feature of India’s climate is the wet season or monsoon. This starts in the southwest at the end of May and d works its way across the country over the next month and a half. While it lasts, regular and prolonged downpours are interspersed with bursts of hot sunshine, and the humidity can be intense. By September, the monsoon has largely receded from the north, but it takes another couple of months before the clouds disappear altogether in the far south. By December, however, most of India enjoys clear skies and relatively cool temperatures. Temperatures peak in May and early June. This is when some locals retreat to the hill stations on higher ground.

The best time, therefore, is during the cool, dry season between October and March in the north and between January and March in the south. In the Himalayas, visits are possible year-round although cold at night in the winter.

The south of India is the closest to the equator so temperatures are hot year-round. Two-thirds of the rain falls from June to August with heavy rains prevalent throughout the day. The rest falls from September to December when torrential downpours in the afternoon leave the rest of the day warm and pleasant.
