Ireland is an island in the North Atlantic to the west of Britain from which it is separated by the Irish Sea. Politically, Ireland is divided into the Republic of Ireland, which covers five-sixths of the island and Northern Ireland, a part of the United Kingdom which covers the remaining area and is located in the north east of the island. The island's geography comprises relatively low lying mountains surrounding a central plain with several navigable rivers extending inland. The island's lush vegetation, a product of its mild climate and frequent rainfall, earns it the name the Emerald Isle, to be experienced on Ireland vacations.

Irish culture has had a significant influence on other cultures, especially in the fields of literature and, to a lesser degree, science and education. Alongside mainstream Western culture, a strong indigenous culture exists, as expressed for example through Gaelic games, Irish music, and the Irish language. The culture of the island has also many features shared with Britain, including the English language.

Two main languages are spoken in Ireland are Irish and English. Irish, now a minority but official language of the Republic of Ireland, was the language of the Irish people for over two thousand years. The main areas where it is largely spoken are down the west of the country, in Donegal, Mayo, Galway and Kerry. Less than 10% of the population of the Republic of Ireland today speaks Irish regularly.

There are three UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Ireland, the River Boyne, Skellig Michael, an island in the Atlantic and the Giant's Causeway in County Antrim in the north. However, the most visited place is Dublin, a city of some considerable charm. It has a major university, Trinity College where the Book of Kells is situated.  The River Liffey cuts right through the centre of the city on its way to the sea. It is home to Dublin Castle, the Guinness Brewery and the iconic Abbey Theatre.  The west coast of Ireland is the most scenic area in the country. Killarney in the south west in County Kerry, apart from being a very attractive town, is the ideal starting point to visit the three tourist regions offering dramatic stunningly wild landscapes and spectacular scenic rugged coastlines when on Ireland tours.  These are the Ring of Kerry which provides a circular journey around its peninsula, 179 kilometres/110 miles in length, the Dingle Peninsula, just north of the Ring of Kerry and the Beara Peninsula just south.

Further north on the west coast is Connemara in the north west of County Galway which has scenery like that out of a fairy tale. Its mountains are a deep and rich colour of green and when the clouds roll in it seems almost magical.  Nearby Galway is an important tourist centre and a gateway to the scenic areas of the county. Galway is a bustling town with a lively nightlife and has charming pedestrian streets and numerous pubs and cafes to enjoy on an Ireland vacation.

Kilkenny in south east Ireland is the smallest city in terms of population in the Republic of Ireland. Known as Ireland's Mediaeval Capital, it offers the visitor a mixture of an exciting vibrant night-life, attractive streets, great shopping opportunities and a rich cultural heritage. The city is also famous for its many medieval buildings. Cork is situated on the banks of the River Lee in the south of the country. It is the second largest city in the Republic of Ireland and the third largest in Ireland.   Uniquely, there are more than thirty bridges separating the city. Elizabeth Fort offers a good view over the city. The Elizabeth Fort Market Festival takes place on Sundays inside the historic fort walls and features Irish-made crafts, gourmet food, and entertainment. St. Finbarr's Cathedral is a magnificent 19th century Gothic building.

There are several typically Irish castles located in the Republic of Ireland all worth visiting on Ireland trips including Bunratty Castle and Blarney Castle.

Belfast is the capital and largest city of Northern Ireland and the second largest city in Ireland after Dublin.  It is an excellent point from which to explore County Antrim.   This county boasts some beautiful inland and coastal scenery which include the scenic Glens of Antrim and the Giants Causeway with its columns of mysterious stepping stones that lead from a cliff foot and disappear under the sea eventually seemingly reappearing on the west coast of Scotland.

A visit to Ireland would not be complete without visiting some of the many pubs which often feature traditional Irish folk music and “craic”, a word which is very important and roughly translates as any or all of the following – atmosphere, gossip, fun, entertainment and enjoyable conversation.
