This 9-day Denmark self-drive takes you across the Faroe Islands, a remote island group located to the north of the United Kingdom. This self-drive tour is perfect for independent travellers who like the flexibility to decide their own pace and itinerary when exploring the world. Whether you prefer a self-drive car with pre-booked accommodation or a rental car, Goway has you covered. The Faroe Islands are perfect destinations to explore at your own pace. If this tour peaks your interest, we also offer self-drive tours in other parts of the world.

The Faroe Islands are a Danish self-governing archipelago located in the North Atlantic Ocean above the United Kingdom. These 18 remote islands are some of the best-kept secrets in Europe. The windswept and treeless moorlands are perfect for hiking, while the mountainous cliffs offer incredible views of the ocean and the surrounding islands. If you love nature and mythical culture, you’ll love a trip to the Faroe Islands.

Your Faroe Islands vacation begins in Sorvagur, where you’ll pick up your car and begin your journey across the islands. Start with a picturesque drive to the villages of Bour and Gasadalur, where you’ll enjoy incredible views of Tindholmur and Mykines. The next day, head through the underground tunnel to Vestmanna, where you can take a boat tour to see the birds that make their home on the cliffs north of the village. Continue on to Kvivik to see the Viking settlements and take the Atlantic Bridge to Eysturoy, where you’ll enjoy wonderful views at Eidi and Gjogv and see the rock formations known as “The Giant and the Old Hag.”

The following day, take a trip to the area around Tjornuvik, where the Vikings settled when they first landed in the Faroe Islands. Also consider heading to the village of Saksun, which is known for its lagoon-like lake and sandy beach leading to the Atlantic Ocean. Continue on to Klaksvik, passing through another subsea tunnel to see the incredible light installations of Trondur Patursson. Pass to the Northern Islands, where you’ll explore Viaareiai, where you can climb to the world’s highest promontory, Enniberg, which has a great vantage point over the surrounding islands. You can also visit Kalsoy, where you’ll learn about the many legends that hold sway over life in the villages.

Continue on to the capital, Torshavn, which is one of the smallest capitals in the world and home to the oldest parliament in the world. While in town, be sure to explore the Old Town, Reyni, visit Fort Skansin, and admire Faroese crafts and handiwork at the design shops near the harbour, Vagsbotn. The next day, enjoy a full-day excursion to Nolsoy, located only 20 minutes across the water from Torshavn. You’ll feel like you’ve travelled decades back in time as you explore the island, which is home to a colony of storm petrels and the incredible lighthouse, which has the largest lens in the world, reaching 3m in diameter and weighing over 4 tonnes.

Close out your Faroe Islands vacation by passing south to Kirkjubour to experience the cultural centre of the islands and visit 900-year-old Roykstovan, where the yeoman to the King of Denmark still lives to this day. You’ll also see Olav’s church, which dates back to 1,111AD and is the oldest remaining church in the islands. Then return to Sorvagur for your flight home.

Day 1

Arrival

Upon arrival a representative will welcome you at the airport and you will have your rented car and a map for the Faroe Islands.

First stop is only some 200 meters down the road where you will check in at Hotel Vagar for two nights. After check in we recommend that you take a drive to the small and picturesque villages Bour and Gasadalur. The tour offers an unparalleled view of the fjord, the islet Tindholmur and Mykines. Until recently the only way to get to charming Gasadalur was on foot from Bour and over the mountain. Although there now is a tunnel to Gasadalur, the village is still unspoiled and has preserved its charm and authenticity.
