What is the currency used in Hong Kong?

The currency used throughout the city is the Hong Kong dollar. Mastercard and Visa are widely used where credit cards are accepted as payment. ATMs are readily found all over Hong Kong.

Do I need a visa to travel to Hong Kong?  

Canadian and American passport holders do not require a visa to visit Hong Kong as a tourist (for a stay of up to 90 days). However, if travelling to mainland China, you will need to obtain a visa for China in advance.

Is Wi-Fi readily available?

Wi-Fi is available throughout Hong Kong with hot spots at all major tourist areas, shopping centres, hotels, and restaurants.

Can I use my cell phone in Hong Kong?

It is possible to purchase a SIM card upon arrival in Hong Kong. However, we suggest you check with your cellular provider to know what your options are. You might be able to get an affordable roaming plan.

Is it safe to drink tap water?

It is safe to drink tap water in Hong Kong unless a sign advises otherwise. However, we suggest that Goway passengers only drink treated or filtered water.

What are the public bathroom facilities like?

Most public bathrooms in Hong Kong will offer western sit-down toilets. Some public bathrooms will not provide toilet paper, so we recommend you bring your own tissues.  

When is the best time to travel to Hong Kong? 

The best time to travel to Hong Kong is March to April and October to November as the weather is sunny and pleasant. However, Hong Kong can be visited year-round. We suggest avoiding the Chinese New Year period held between January and February and the Chinese National holiday period in early October, as tourism sites become very crowded during these times.

What are the transportation options in Hong Kong?

There are a variety of reliable and efficient public transportation options in Hong Kong, including MTR (Hong Kong’s subway), buses, streetcars, and ferries. For quicker and more direct travel, Goway can arrange private vehicle transfers.

Is Hong Kong a family-friendly destination? 

Hong Kong is a very family friendly destination offering many attractions and experiences for the whole family such as Hong Kong’s Disneyland, Ocean Park, riding the funicular railway up to Victoria Peak, and shopping in the Tai Yuen Street Market also known as Toy Street. Keep in mind that Hong Kong can be quite hilly, so it might be difficult to travel with young children in strollers.

How welcoming is Hong Kong to LGBTQ travellers?

Hong Kong is very welcoming to LGBTQ travelers.The city celebrates pride with an annual pride parade! However, it does hold somewhat conservative values so public displays of affection between gay or straight couples is not common. 

Is tipping customary in Hong Kong?

Tipping is not customary in Hong Kong culture, but feel free to leave a small tip if the service has been particularly good. It is always appreciated.

What are the main annual festivals or events held?

Chinese New Year takes place each January to February (it varies each year). The Dragon Boat Festival takes place from May to June (it also varies). July 1 is the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Establishment Day, and the Chung Yeung Festival takes place each October.

Should I stay in Kowloon or on Hong Kong Island?

Most Goway passengers will stay in Kowloon, home to the Tsim Sha Tsui shopping district and some of the best markets in the Mongkok area. Also, you can watch the nightly Symphony of Lights show from the Kowloon waterfront promenade. Hong Kong Island has Victoria Peak, Stanley Market, and more of the colonial architecture but it is very hilly so not as easy to walk around. Regardless, both sides are connected by frequent ferries and have a vibrant nightlife and great restaurants.

Should I visit Macau? 

Glitzy and extravagant, Macau is an island located 66 km from Hong Kong. Travelling between Hong Kong and Macau can be done by high-speed ferry. This is the only place in China where gambling is legal, so there are a lot of casinos, luxury hotels, and high-end shops. It’s a popular place for Chinese tourists. It is possible to visit Macau on a full-day excursion from Hong Kong with enough time to see the Portugese colonial sites and main landmarks. But if you want to shop and experience the entertainment, please plan to spend at least one night in Macau.
