What language is spoken in El Salvador?

The official language of El Salvador is Salvadorian Spanish. This Spanish dialect is similar to Spanish in the rest of Central America but differs in pronunciation and usage which is why it is called Salvadorian Spanish. English is not widely spoken except in major tourist areas. Learning a bit of Spanish will be helpful and welcomed by locals. 

What currency is used in El Salvador?

The currency used throughout the country is the US dollar (USD). Credit cards are only accepted in larger hotels, restaurants and tourist shops. ATMs are easy to find in larger cities but more difficult in rural towns. 

Do I need a visa to travel to El Salvador?

A visa is not required when travelling as a tourist from Canada or the United States for up to 90 days. There is a tourist fee of US$10.00 on arrival in El Salvador which is charged when going through immigration at the airport, land border, or seaport.

When is the best time to travel to El Salvador?

The best time to visit El Salvador is during the dry season from December to March, when the weather is warm and there is a lower chance of downpours. 

Is there transportation within El Salvador?

The most common forms of local transportation in El Salvador are buses and taxis. When taking a taxi be sure to look for an “A” precursor on the plate which denotes a licensed cab. 

Is El Salvador a family friendly destination?

El Salvador is not a typical family destination but is great for the more adventurous family as it is less touristy than its neighbors. It is a country rich with culture, history, natural beauty, pristine beaches, volcanoes and ruins, with plenty of activities for families to enjoy together. 

How welcoming is El Salvador to LGBTQ travellers and families?

Although El Salvador has legislation protecting against discrimination surrounding sexual orientation and same-sex sexual activity, legal systematic aggression and social isolation of the LGBTQ community are prevalent throughout the country. In San Salvador, there are some cultural centers and clubs that are LGBTQ-friendly.

Tipping

In El Salvador, tipping is not mandatory. It is customary to leave a 10% tip at restaurants which are sometimes included on your bill so be sure to check. Tipping of $1-2 USD is not expected but is appreciated by housekeeping and bellman if they help you with your luggage. If on a guided tour, a $7-10 USD tip per person for the guide and $3-5 USD  per person for the driver is common. Leaving an extra tip is always at your own discretion but will always be appreciated.   

Events

In El Salvador, most holidays and events are religious based such as the San Miguel Carnival which is one of El Salvador's most popular events, held every November during the city of San Miguel 's patron saint festivals. Other popular festivities include Holy Week or Semana Santa in March, which is celebrated in most Spanish-speaking countries, Palm Festival in May, Independence Day in September and August Festival in early August.
