Best Time to Visit Finland

It really depends on what it is the visitor is doing on Finland vacations. The 4 seasons are all unique weather-wise. Most cultural events take place in the summer whereas winter is, of course, the time for winter sports. One thing that is very evident is the amount of daylight depending on the time of year. In the winter, the nights are extremely long and in the summer extremely short.

The months of February and March are better for winter activities than December and January as there is a little more daylight. The snow season in northern Finland begins in November and lasts at least until May. In the inland regions of southern and central Finland, the first snow falls at the beginning of December and melts during late March and April.

Springtime varies wildly from north to south. Snow still lingers into April in the north whereas wildflowers are beginning to peep out in the south. Summer is warm to hot with plenty of sunshine. The fall is a wonderful time to see the colours of reds, browns and yellows. The colours are especially exceptional in Lapland.

The best times to see the Northern Lights are spring and fall. However, in Lapland, the lights shine about every other clear night between September and March. In southern Finland, they are visible on about 10 to 20 nights a year. If you see that the night sky is clear and starry, your chances of seeing the Northern Lights are good.
