Northern Ireland: Travel Information
Northern Ireland is a part of the United Kingdom and shares a border to the south and west with the Republic of Ireland. It has stunning landscapes and scenery. Northern Ireland was created in 1921 when Ireland was partitioned between Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland by the Government of Ireland Act. Northern Ireland consists of six counties: County Antrim, County Armagh, County Down, County Fermanagh, County Londonderry and County Tyrone. Since the end of “The Troubles”, Northern Ireland has witnessed an increase of visitors. Attractions include cultural festivals, musical and artistic traditions, countryside and geographical sites of interest, public houses, welcoming hospitality and sports (especially golf and fishing).
Belfast is the capital and largest city in Northern Ireland. It is also the second largest city on the island of Ireland (after Dublin). It has undergone a renaissance in recent years and is now a vibrant, modern city. Derry or Londonderry ("the Maiden City") is the second city of Northern Ireland and well worth a visit for its famous stone city walls which date from the 16th Century and are the only complete city walls in Ireland.
The Mourne Mountains are where old mountain tracks take you past lakes, rivers, woodland and up to the many peaks. Slieve Donnard is the highest mountain in the Mournes range and also the highest mountain in Northern Ireland. It offers spectacular views from the summit towards England, and Scotland. The north coast of Northern Ireland has some wonderful scenery. This coastline is of outstanding natural beauty where a breathtaking and rugged coastline merges with glens and lush forest parks. The world famous Giant's Causeway is Northern Irelands only UNESCO World Heritage site with its about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns that were the result of an ancient volcanic eruption. These columns form a path, or “highway”, that disappears under the sea, lending itself to the legend that it was used by giants.
