The Complete South West Self Drive

Duration
9 Days
Prices From:
AU$ 1,309

Like a whole other country, Western Australia enchants visitors with natural icons unlike any found in the east, delicious wine and cuisine, and a history all of its own. Explore the southwest tip of Australia in detail and at your own pace on this self-drive adventure.

This 9-day self-drive Western Australia vacation opens up the southwest corner of the country for the independent traveler, nature lover, and wine snob all in one. On a round-trip from Perth, you’ll visit all the region’s highlights, plus a few hidden surprises.

Set out down the coast, bound for the Margaret River, one of Australia’s favourite wine producing regions. Take your time, stopping it at a couple of wineries or restaurants before going on to Pemberton. This region is known for its impressive karri trees, including the world’s tallest fire lookout tree, which is open to climb. Your next destination is Albany, WA’s oldest permanently settled town, surrounded by impressive coastal scenery and beaches.

Further along the coast, you’ll reach Esperance, a coastal town perfectly positioned between white sand beaches and spectacular national parks. The surrounding islands are also popular with visitors if you have time. You might even want to venture east of town to Cape Le Grand National Park, or to Spencer Lake – aka Pink Lake. And it is pink! One of WA’s strangest and most distinctive natural sights, this colourful body of water sits just metres from the endless blue of the Southern Ocean, protected by a thin strip of dry land.

Turn inland, bound for Kalgoorlie and the ‘outback’ of WA. See the Tin Camels of Norseman and the Pink Salmon Gums, and take a history break at The WA Museum of Kalgoorlie-Boulder. After two nights here, the journey back to Perth is divided with a night at Hyden, known for one of WA’s most famous natural wonders, Wave Rock. This incredible ‘flared slope’ has been formed over millions of years by groundwater weathering the bedrock. You might also stop in for photos at nearby rock formations Hippo’s Yawn and The Humps.

Stop in at Corrigin for an all-new appreciation of the humble Aussie cattle dog on your way back to Perth. Drop off your hire car ready for your flight home, or stay an extra few days to enjoy the capital in all its sun-drenched splendour.
