Edinburgh and the Countryside

Duration
6 Days
Prices From:
AU$ 1,239

MODERATE | TAILOR-MADE: Edinburgh and the countryside are yours to discover on this 6-day tailor-made adventure. Enjoy 3 days exploring the Scottish capital as well as several sites from the Outlander series. Later, set out on a small group tour to travel through majestic mountains and quaint villages of the Scottish Highlands.

See the highlights of Edinburgh and the essential sights of the surrounding country on this 6-day escape to Scotland’s charismatic capital.

Get your bearings on your first two days, perhaps touring Edinburgh Castle, or Hollyrood House, the Queen’s official Edinburgh residence. Then take an evening walking tour, served in true Edinburgh style with extra chills. Edinburgh’s 17th century residents were great fans of a ghoulish tale, and the city is packed with enough of them to fill your tour. A small group Outlander Adventure then takes you out of the city to Culross, a city almost unchanged since the 16th century. Pass Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument to Doune Castle. Both Outlander and Monty Python fans, take note and use your audio guide! Explore Linlithgow Palace and Blackness Castle, before a photo stop at Midhope Castle completes your day.

Time for a trip into the highlands, spending a day in Cairngorms National Park. Stop in for a wee dram at a famous whisky distillery (you’ve never tried it until you’ve tried it in Scotland), before settling in overnight at Inverness. Dodge ‘Nessie’ themed tourist tat on your way to what Loch Ness really has to offer, stunning ruins on its shores, reached on an atmospheric boat trip. Return to Edinburgh for one more night before you depart.

Day 2

Edinburgh Walking Tour - Ghosts and Ghouls

Entertainment - 17th Century style! An evening of spine-tingling storytelling awaits you. How best to experience our grim and ghostly past? Just as our ghoulish ancestors did... with gusto! The infamous 'Edinburgh mob' loved the 'entertainment' of blood, guts and gore. And there was plenty provided! Especially at the Mercat Cross. Hear grisly tales of witchcraft, torture and restless spirits as you venture down medieval closes and descend into the haunted Blair Street Underground Vaults. As night darkens, savour a welcome drink by candle-light, as you weave tales in your atmospheric, underground cellar. Visit where the ghosts of Edinburgh's past still haunt her present...

Day 3

Small Group Outlander Adventure

Leave Edinburgh and travel back in time as your driver-guide takes you over the Queensferry Crossing to Culross.

This virtually-unchanged 16th century village overlooks the sea and poses as the fictional town of Cranesmuir. You have time to visit Claire's herb garden, explore the palace, or wander the ancient streets while you imagine what life must have been like 400 years ago.

You journey past Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument to Doune Castle, or as it's called in Outlander, Castle Leoch. This formidable building gives you an insight into the living conditions of a Scottish earl in the 14th century. You can also listen to an excellent audio guide about how this castle was used as a filming location for Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Your next stop is Linlithgow Palace. Here you have time to enjoy beautiful views to the Forth bridges, have a picnic by the loch, and explore the ruins of Mary Queen of Scots' birthplace. And if you're feeling brave, you can visit the spot where that gruesome Outlander scene took place.

You then travel the short distance to Blackness Castle. It's an impressive castle that's known as the 'ship that never sailed' because it resembles a giant stone boat. You have time to walk along the ramparts and explore the fictional headquarters of Jack Randall.

Midhope Castle is your next highlight. Unfortunately, visitors are unable to go inside the castle, but Jamie's lovely Lallybroch home is still an essential photo opportunity for any fan of the show.

Before we head back to Edinburgh, you have a final stop in the colourful harbour area of South Queensferry.

Day 4

Edinburgh

You leave Edinburgh and head north across the River Forth towards the Highlands.

You make a short stop in one of the quintessential Scottish towns bordering the highland fault line, before crossing into the Cairngorms National Park. There are numerous options on route including a famous whisky distillery, stunning caledonian forest walks, ancient standing stones, world-changing battlefields, and beautiful lochs. What you do today will be decided by your group and the ever- changing Scottish climate. Ample time for lunch will be given en route.

You then continue north and arrive in Inverness, where you're dropped off at your accommodation. The evening is free for you to explore the capital of the Highlands.
