Scotland: Scottish Lowlands

  • Explore history through the ruins of the fortress known as Dunnottar Castle
  • Trace the River Clyde to its mouth at the Firth of Clyde, the deepest coastal waters of Britain
  • Step away from the past to visit the modern, and still used, Glamis Castle
  • Jedburgh Abbey Ruins, Scotland

The Scottish Lowlands is the region south of Edinburgh and Glasgow. They consist of rolling hills and moorland in the west to gentle valleys and a picturesque coastline in the east. There is lots of history to be experienced through ancient abbeys, stately homes, and historical castles. These include Melrose Abbey, a magnificent ruin with incredibly decorated masonry dating back to the 15th Century.

Jedburgh is a town and former royal burgh in the Scottish Borders and the traditional county town of the historic county of Roxburghshire. Here you can visit Jedburgh Abbey which dates back to the 11th Century. The Abbey, though much damaged over the years, especially by invasions from England, is still one of the finest late Norman buildings remaining in Scotland. Abbotsford House is the former residence of the novelist and poet, Sir Walter Scott. Mary, Queen of Scots’s House is now a museum with displays of memorabilia of Mary including jewellery, belongings, documents, and paintings. Jedburgh Castle Jail, built in the early 19th Century on the site of a medieval castle, is now a museum.
