Located along the Atlantic Coast on the Gulf of Guinea, Accra is Ghana’s administrative and commercial centre and capital city. Like many metropolises in sub-Saharan Africa, Ghana is a busy place, with heavy traffic, dust-filled side streets, and bustling markets and restaurants. It’s also a great place to eat and shop. You’ll find great seafood restaurants and stalls along the water.

Makola Market is the unofficial centre of the city, with an endless stream of people shopping from street-side vendors for goods, clothes, and shoes. Independence Square, also known as Black Star Square for the massive black stars that top its concrete central monument, has the Eternal Flame of African Liberation that burns all year round. It’s dedicated to the country’s liberation but is something of a Brutalist curiosity.

The neighbourhood of Jamestown used to be its own municipality but merged with Accra as the city expanded. It’s a poor part of the city but offers insight into the colonial past with the 17th-century James Fort and the whitewashed lighthouse.

For beaches, Labadi Beach is arguably the most popular, with people gathering on its long stretches of sand to play soccer, party to dance to music, eat at beachside restaurants, and, of course, swim in the waters of the gulf. It’s always busy, but justifiably so. For a more tranquil alternative, head to Bojo Beach, which is clean and clear, but requires a small entrance fee.
