Papua New Guinea Weather

  • A local man
  • Traditional huts
  • Coral Reef

The climate of Papua New Guinea is tropical and pleasant but is not divided into traditional seasons. Instead, months can be split into the rainy season (December to March) and the dry season (May to October). The rainy season can expect heavier rainfalls courtesy of the northwest monsoon, while the dry season sees trade winds from the southeast that bring dry, cooler weather. Annual rainfalls can be hard to predict due to alternating north and south monsoon patterns with April and November being the only two months that are not traditionally affected by monsoon seasons.

Like most countries, temperatures in Papua New Guinea can be dependent on geography. Coastal and lowland areas are usually hot and humid with temperatures averaging around 28˚C. The humidity can be quite high in the lowlands, usually sitting at around 80%. Highland areas are cooler with temperatures in the late teens and early twenties with humidity averaging between 65-80%. Some of the highest mountain points in Papua New Guinea have been known to see frost and even snowfalls.
