This afternoon, travel to the edge of Doi Suthep National Park to visit Patara Elephant Farm. Upon arrival, meet with the staff to hear about the farm's efforts to conserve the elephants' natural habitats and to revive Thailand's elephant population.
Spend a few hours being a 'mahout', an elephant caretaker. Change into a mahout outfit and take a short walk to meet with the elephants. Alongside a real mahout, learn how to approach the elephants and judge their temperament. After gaining the trust of the animals, get a bit closer to feed them. Be amazed as their trunks skilfully scoop up food.
Afterwards, join the mahouts as they bathe the elephants, helping the animals cool off and cleanse their thick skin. Having bonded with one of the elephants, you will have the opportunity to ride bareback through the rice paddies and forest to a beautiful waterfall. Enjoy the views as the elephant slowly lumbers down dirt tracks.
Return to the main farm and bid farewell to the elephants and mahouts. You'll be transferred back to your hotel in Chiang Mai with a camera-full of memories from this unique animal encounter.
