DELUXE | PRIVATE-GUIDED: Experience the dramatic and breathtaking scenery of the Norwegian fjords using the Hanseatic city of Bergen as a base. Here you will enjoy the fairy-tale like atmosphere of Norway’s wonderland, but only after a remarkable train journey from Oslo to Bergen through amazing countryside.

Commence your stay with one night’s accommodation in Oslo, Norway’s capital before catching the train to the west coast. After a very scenic rail journey, arrive at Bergen. Bergen is known as the “Gateway to the Fjords” because of its location on Norway’s west coast and its proximity to the wildest, yet loveliest fjords in the country. It is also Norway’s second largest city. Founded more than 900 years ago, Bergen has roots to the Viking Age and beyond. With its combination of coastal scenery and a backdrop of mountains, it is no wonder it has a reputation as Norway’s most attractive city. But that’s not all. It has a charm which stems from its Hanseatic architecture and its lively and vibrant city life. With its offerings of museums, art galleries, cultural events and dining opportunities, it is a city well worth visiting.

During your 3 night stay, you will have a private guided city tour. This will include the famous fish and flower Market, Bryggen Harbour, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its quaint gabled houses and the old Hanseatic Quarter with its many museums, shops, restaurants and pubs. Then drive past the Fredriksberg Fortress and the Bergen Aquarium which has one of the largest collections of marine life in Europe. Then travel through some of Bergen’s attractive suburbs before reaching Nordaas Lake where you will see the home of Norway’s great composer, Edvard Grieg. Finally drive by Gamlehaugen, the residence of the Royal Family when they visit Bergen.

The next morning, set off on a tour through some of Norway’s most spectacular scenery, the fjords. Start with a train journey to Myrdal where you join the Flam Railway, one of the steepest standard railway lines in the world. This 20 kilometre/12 mile journey travels through breathtaking scenery. On arrival at Flam, a charming village, surrounded by mountains, waterfalls and narrow valleys, spend time there and possibly visit the Flam Railway Museum.

After this, you will begin your fjord safari. Board your boat sailing to several places. You will see marine life and birds including seals, porpoises and eagles. Head from the Aurlandfjord and travel up the Naeroyfjord, one of the narrowest in Europe. Eventually arrive in Gudvangen where you will join a bus to take you to Voss. Travel via one of the steepest roads in Europe. On arrival in Voss, continue by train back to Bergen.

Day 3

Bergen City Tour - Private

A guided tour of the city, including a visit to the famous Fish and Flower Market, the old Bryggen Harbour with its gabled pack houses, the popular Hanseatic Quarter and the ancient Maria Church.

Bergen was founded in 1070 A.D. During the 12th and 13th centuries, when the Kingdom of Norway was at the peak of its power and there was lively communication between the mother country and the Norwegian colonies in the islands to the west, Bergen was the capital of Norway. The Norwegian kings resided here, and many historical events took place in this busy port, which in those days had no fewer than 27 churches and abbeys. Bergen owed wealth and prominence to the fish export trade - mainly dried fish which was one of the most important products of the Middle Ages.

The town grew to become the largest in Norway. Today, however, Bergen is the second largest city in Norway, surpassed only by Oslo, the present capital. Continue along Bryggen - the Hanseatic Quarter of Bergen, past the well-known Fish Market and drive towards the peninsula of Nordnes with its typical 19th century white painted wooden houses. On both sides of the peninsula you can see the harbour.

Continue past Fredriksberg Fortress and the Aquarium of Bergen - housing one of the largest collections of marine life in Europe. Proceed along the west-side of Bergen, crossing the Puddefjord and continue past the residential area of Laksevaag before we reach Krohnegaarden with a splendid view of the suburb of Fyllingsdalen, one of the largest suburbs of Bergen with a population of approx. 25.000.

You pass Boenes and continue along the Nordaas Lake where the composer Grieg's home is situated, and then you pass Gamlehaugen, the residence of the Royal Family when they are visiting Bergen.

Day 4

Norway In a Nutshell

A trip through the most breathtaking fjord area. One of the most popular trips in Norway, this round trip lasts about nine hours and takes you through some of the most beautiful landscapes in Norway.

The tour includes the Bergen Railway, Flam Railway and a fjord safari with a local guide from Flam to Gudvangen. The Basic Fjord Tour starts at the railway station in Bergen with the scenic railway journey from Bergen to Myrdal station. From Myrdal station, the tour continues on the famous Flam Railway, one of the steepest standard gauge railway lines in the world.

The Flam Railway is very easy to find at Myrdal station. The 20-km-long train ride is a fantastic journey that offers panoramic views of some of the wildest and most magnificent mountain scenery Norway has to offer, including the famous Kjosfossen waterfall. The train ride lasts for roughly an hour. When you arrive down at Flam, you have some time to explore the village.

Flam is a charming small village surrounded by steep mountainsides, cascading waterfalls and narrow valleys. It is lovely just to stroll around, but you can also visit the Flam Railway Museum. It is also a nice place to catch a bite to eat before embarking on the fjord cruise return journey to Bergen. The boat stops at several places en route and the guide tells interesting stories about the local history of the fjords. You will also have a good chance of seeing some marine wildlife and birds in their natural element, for example seals, harbour porpoises and eagles.

The boat heads out the Aurlandfjord and up the Naeroyfjord. The Naeroyfjord is one of the narrowest fjords in Europe. In 2005, the Naeroyfjord was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List. You arrive back in Bergen early evening. The Sognefjord in a Nutshell Day Tour lasts about nine hours, and it takes you through some of the most beautiful scenery Norway has to offer.

There is also an option to travel the same journey by starting with the Fjord cruise from Bergen to Flam, then return to Bergen via the Flam Railway via Myrdal.
