Just 200 km (125miles) south of Delhi, Agra is situated on the banks of the Yamuna River, in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and is a must-see on India tours.

Agra’s golden age began during the Mughal Empire. Known then as Akbarabad, Agra went through building development as it was considered one of the most important Mughal cities. Built-in that period are three UNESCO World Heritage sites - Fatehpur Sikri, Agra Fort, and the world-famous landmark, Taj Mahal.

Fatehpur Sikri is an abandoned, walled city located approximately 39kms from Agra. Built during the 16th century, and deserted only a few years later, this virtually unchanged city featured royal palaces, pavilions, courts, a mosque, and the best-preserved collections of Mughal architecture in India.

The Taj Mahal is a white marble mausoleum, built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, in memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Constructed from 1632-1653, and employing thousands of craftsmen and artisans, the monument is an integrated complex of structures, combining the best of Persian, Turkish, and Indian architectural styles.

Near the Taj Mahal is Agra Fort, where Emperor Shah Jahan spent his last hours as a prisoner while being able to view his masterpiece on a clear day. Constructed mainly from red sandstone, this 94-acre walled city is an interesting mix of Hindu and Islamic architecture on Indian tours.

Easily accessible by train from Delhi and steeped in rich architectural culture, Agra is a must-see destination for anyone touring northern India.
