Hungary Tours and Vacation Packages
About Hungary
Hungary is a landlocked country and is part of the European Union. More than half of the country is flat with the highest parts being in the Carpathian Mountains bordering Slovenia. Hungary boasts the largest lake in Central Europe, Lake Balaton. The principal waterway is the renowned River Danube which flows through the capital, Budapest. Most Hungary tours begin here, with good reason as Budapest is regarded as one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. Despite its relatively small size, the country is home to numerous World Heritage Sites, the UNESCO Biosphere reserves, the second-largest thermal lake in the world and the largest natural grassland in Europe. In terms of buildings, Hungary is home to the largest synagogue in Europe (The Great Synagogue), the largest medicinal bath in Europe, the third-largest church in Europe, the second-largest Baroque castle in the world and the largest Early Christian Necropolis outside of Italy.
Hungary has been ethnically diverse since its inception, and while today over 90% of the population are ethnically Hungarian, pockets of ethnic and cultural Slovaks, Romanians, Germans and others make up the country. Due to the border changes in Hungary after World War I, over 2 million ethnic and cultural Hungarians live in bordering countries, as well. The Hungarians, otherwise known as Magyars, are the descendants of several tribes from Central Asia who were believed to be fierce, nomadic horsemen and came to Central Europe in the 9th century. More information about Hungarian Culture Hungarians are rightly proud of their unique, complex, sophisticated, richly expressive language, Hungarian (Magyar pronounced "mahdyar"). It is most closely related to Mansi and Khanty of Western Siberia. It is also classified as a Finno-Ugric language which includes Finnish and Estonian; it is not at all related to any of its neighbours. It is also considered one of the most difficult languages for English speakers to learn. Thermal water is plentiful in Hungary with over 1000 thermal springs in the country (more than 100 just in the Budapest area) many of which have been turned into baths and spas. There are hundreds of individual baths all around the country which can be visited on Hungary tours. The first thermal baths were erected by the Romans more than 2000 years ago.
