Located in Central Europe, Hungary is a landlocked country that shares borders with many nations. To the north is Slovakia with Ukraine in the northeast. Romania is in the east while Austria and Slovenia are in the west. Finally, both Croatia and Serbia share Hungary’s southern borders. Geographically, the country can be divided into three areas, the Great Alföld, Transdanubia and the North Hungarian Mountains.

The Great Alföld, also known as the Great Hungarian Plain, stretches across the southern and eastern parts of the country as well as parts of Ukraine, Romania, Serbia and Croatia. Although in total the plain covers 100,000 square kilometres, in Hungary, it covers 52,000 square kilometres thus making up more than half of the country’s area.

Transdanubia is a hilly region located west of the Danube River. It reaches all the way to the foothills of the Austrian Alps. The landscape of the region is dotted with hills, valleys, basins, mountains and plains. Lake Balaton is located in the centre of Transdanubia, and the area also hosts the Transdanubia Mountains.

The North Hungarian Mountains are naturally located in northern Hungary. There are four different ranges within this region: Börzsöny, Cserhát, Mátra and the Bükk. The highest mountain in the country is Kékes at 1,014 m (3,327 ft) found in the Mátra Mountains.

Despite being landlocked, Hungary is home to some impressive bodies of water. Lake Balatan is the largest lake in Central Europe and is an incredibly popular tourist spot. Lake Hévíz, the largest thermal lake in the world is also found in Hungary. Finally, both the Danube and the Tisza rivers are navigable in Hungary.
