Tunisia Geography and Maps
Tunisia is a small country situated on the Mediterranean coast of North Africa, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Nile Valley. It faces east towards the Gulf of Gabes and is bordered by Algeria to the west and by Libya to the south. Geographically, Tunisia can be divided into three major regions: the north, the “Tell” country and the southern region.
The north is characterized by mountains and a small coastal strip. The Dorsal is the eastern extension of the Atlas Mountains and runs across Tunisia in a northeasterly direction from the Algerian border to the Cape Bon Peninsula in the east. The highest point in Tunisia is Jebel ech Chambi, which stands at 1,544 m (5,065 ft). The “Tell” country is made up of western and central districts. It is a region of low, rolling hills and plains. This area is an extension of the mountains to the west in Algeria. The southern region of the country is low-lying and mostly arid. It forms the beginning of the Sahara Desert which comprises approximately 40% of Tunisia’s total area.
The coastline of Tunisia runs for 1,300 km (807.78 mi). It is home to a fertile coastal plain called the Sahil. Off the coast of Tunisia are the Kerkennah Islands, a series of low-lying islands no more than 13 m above sea level. The main islands are Chergui and Gharbi. Another island called Djerba is connected to the mainland by a road originally built by the Romans and Djerba provided the backdrop for some scenes in “Star Wars”.
