France: Food & Drink
Many have suggested that French food is the best cuisine in the world. From incredible baking to world-renowned Michelin star restaurants, the culinary culture of the country runs deep. Being one of the largest countries in Europe, France has various regions. As such, the cuisine of the country differs depending on where one travels. Cheese is a staple of many French diets and every region of the country has its own specialty.
Popular dishes include:
Bisque: This is a smooth and creamy soup that is based on the strained broth of crustaceans. These crustaceans can be lobster, crab, shrimp or crayfish.
Pot-au-feu: This dish is a traditional family meal. It is a beef stew cooked with various vegetables as well as oxtail and marrowbone meat.
Coq au vin: This chicken based dish is made with wine, lardons, mushrooms and sometimes garlic. As this dish comes from the Burgundy region, that is traditionally the wine used.
Bouillabaisse: This traditional Provencal fish stew from Marseille contains at least three different kinds of fish or shellfish.
Baguettes: Bread is a major part of French cuisine and this long, thin loaf of crusty bread in particular, is a staple of French meals. It also is used for making sandwiches.
Macaroon: A favourite dessert, macaroons are sweet meringue-based treats made with egg whites, icing sugar, almond powder and food colouring.
Wine is an important part of French culture and cuisine. One of the largest wine producers in the world, it is made around the country. It is the source of many different grape varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot noir and more) that are now planted in other countries. The most famous wines from France include those from Bordeaux, Burgundy, the Rhone and the Beaujolais. Beers are also popular in France with local beers including Kronenberg and 1664.
Things to know:
A service charge of between 12-15% is usually added to bills in hotels, restaurants and bars, however it is still customary to leave small change.
