Food and dining play an important part in the everyday life and culture of Greece. Eating out is common and so there are many restaurants to choose from. The cuisine of Greece has been greatly influenced by Italy and Turkey, as well as its coastlines. Fresh produce is a mainstay in Greek food, as is olive oil and cheese. Feta cheese is a staple in Greece, but it is just one of many delicious kinds found in the country. As a result of the long periods of sunshine that the country enjoys, there are many unique herbs and spices that flavour many dishes.
Popular dishes include:
Horiatiki Salata (Greek salad): This salad combines fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, peppers, olives, olive oil, oregano and feta cheese.
Moussaka: This is one of the most famous dishes from Greece. It consists of an oven-baked casserole with layered eggplant and meat, topped with a creamy béchamel sauce.
Tiropites: A favourite snack, tiropites are phyllo pastry sheets that are filled with a mixture of Greek cheeses, and cut into triangles.
Dolmathankia: This dish combines rice, pine nuts and fresh herbs that are stuffed in grape leaves. Dolmathakia can be served either warm or cold.
Tzatziki: Greek-styled yogurt is popular around the world, but it serves as the base for one of the most well-known Greek dips. Tzatziki is made from strained yogurt, olive oil, garlic, chopped cucumbers and seasoned with dill.
Calamari: Taking advantage of Greece’s coastlines, Calamari is squid that has been fried or sautéed with onions and red wine.
Baklava: The nation’s favourite dessert, baklava is a pastry made with phyllo dough that is layered and filled with a cinnamon and nut filling, covered in sweet syrup.
Drink
Recent years have witnessed Greece’s wine industry expand. Red wines from the Naoussa area in the Peloponnese are particularly popular, as are white wines from Santorini and Crete. Ouzo is the most famous alcoholic drink in Greece. A very strong drink, it can be served with either ice or water. It has been said that the best Ouzo comes from Lesvos.
