Travel to Greece should include Corfu, an island in the Ionian Sea lying just off the coast of Albania. Unlike some Greek islands, it is lusher and greener than most. Historically, it has been under the domination of the Venetians, the French and the British. Corfu has a stunning coastline and is known for its excellent beaches when on a Greece vacation. The best beaches are scattered around the island. Agios Stefanos is a long sandy beach located in a scenic fishing village with a backdrop of gentle hills and olive groves. Glyfada, not far from Corfu Town, is one of the most popular beaches attracting both families and a younger crowd. Agios Georgios is a pleasant, quiet resort with much natural beauty, located beneath a series of panoramic rocky cliffs and is a good centre for water sports. Kavos is popular with the younger crowd due to its extensive nightlife.

The old town of Corfu is well preserved and is a UNESCO World Heritage. The Italian influence can be seen when strolling through its narrow cobblestoned streets with stairways and vaulted passages. In the centre of the town is Spianada, a very large square with 19th Century French architecture and full of trees, wide paths, benches, a bandstand, fountains and monuments. The Liston is a street with galleries and archways, modelled on the Rue de Rivoli in Paris and offering a large selection of coffee shops and restaurants. There is nearby, a 15th Century fortress, an imposing cathedral and St. Michael and George Palace with its attractive grounds.

The town has a number of museums which include the Museum of Asian Art (housed in the Palace) with its unique collection of 12,000 artifacts, the Archaeological Museum with its exhibits from the excavations undertaken in the early part of the 20th Century of the Temple of Artemis, the Byzantine Museum with its collection of rare items from the 15th to the 19th Centuries and the Dionysios Solomos Museum, dedicated to the national poet of Greece.

Other places of interest, on trips to Greece and Corfu, include the small but beautiful Mon Repos Palace where Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh was born, the Kanoni, a circular terrace offering splendid views and grounds and containing the ruins of two Doric temples and the Achilleion, a palace built by the Empress Elisabeth of Austria with a beautifully landscaped garden containing statues of mythological heroes.

Corfu was home to the literary British Durrell Family in the 1930s. Gerald Durrell's memoir “My Family and Other Animals” is about the five years that he and his family spent on the island.
