Located in southern Europe, on the Balkan Peninsula, Greece has the longest coastline in Europe due to its numerous islands. The country shares its northern borders with Bulgaria, North Macedonia, and Albania. To the east is the Aegean Sea and Turkey, to the south is the Mediterranean Sea, and the Ionian Sea is to the west.

Mountains, the highest of which is Mount Olympus, dominate approximately two-thirds of the country. Standing at 2,917 m (9570.21 ft.), Mount Olympus is the mythic home of the Twelve Olympians in Greek mythology.

The country can be divided into three main geographic regions. The first is the peninsular mainland, the second is the Peloponnese peninsular, and finally, the islands. The Greek Islands encompass more than 6,000 islands and islets. Of these 6,000, only 227 are inhabited and many have fewer than 100 people. The most famous, and popular, of these islands, are Crete, Rhodes, and Corfu. As a result of these islands, Greece’s coastline stretches for 13,676 km.

Athens is the capital and largest city in Greece. One of the oldest cities in the world, it remains the economic, cultural, political, and financial hub of the country.
