Colombia Geography and Maps
Colombia is located in the northwest corner of the South American continent. It is the only country in the region that has a coastline on both the Caribbean and the Pacific Ocean. Colombia also shares borders with Panama, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela and Brazil.
There are five natural regions in Colombia: the Caribbean coast, the Andes, the Pacific coast, the Orinoquía and the Amazon. The Caribbean coast stretches from 1,600 km (994 mi) and is home to white sandy beaches and mountains including Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta which at 5,770 m (18,930.44 ft) is the highest coastal mountain in the world. The Andes is the longest mountain range in the world and stretches across Colombia in three ranges that run south to north with peaks reaching higher than 3,500 m (11,482.94 ft). The Orinoquía, also known as the Eastern Plains, covers over 20% of the country.
Broad rivers cross the area and in the southwest is the Serrania de La Macarena which is a range that is independent of the Andes. Finally, 10% of the extensive Amazon rainforest belongs to Colombia. The Amazon is one of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet with one in ten known species inhabiting the rainforest, thus constituting the largest collection of living species in the world.
