Bath is the only place in the UK to have the whole city designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is famous for its hot springs, Roman baths, medieval heritage and stately Georgian architecture. The city was laid out in stately avenues, streets and crescents full of neo-classical public buildings. Some of the architecture is stunning. One example is Royal Crescent, an elegant row of 30 Georgian-style terraced houses laid out in a circular crescent and an iconic landmark. All over the city are other similar architectural gems.
In the heart of the city, you will find the Roman Baths which are the well-preserved remains of one of the most impressive historic sites in England. The Roman period introduced a complex of baths, the remains of which were re-discovered in the 18th Century. Today, you can bathe in the country’s only natural thermal springs, just as the Romans used to do, relaxing in the mineral-rich waters.
Bath Abbey is a Gothic church first built in 1499 and is located next to the Roman Baths. Great views of the city and the surrounding countryside are available from the Abbey Tower but be prepared to climb the 212 steps to the top.
Pulteney Bridge and Pulteney Weir were designed by Robert Adam and completed in 1773. The bridge is one of only four bridges in the world with shops across the full span on both sides overlooking the impressive Pulteney Weir. Great Pulteney Street is a quintessential Georgian street on the other side of the bridge.
Bath has several parks which include Parade Gardens in the heart of the city overlooking the river with a floral display and bandstand. Victoria Park is Bath’s largest park in front of Royal Crescent with its botanical gardens and Sydney Park which Jane Austen used to frequent.
Bath is synonymous with the English writer Jane Austen, the author of Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion, who lived here in the early 1800s and used the city as a setting for two of her novels. The Jane Austen Centre is where guides in period costume bring the era to life by telling the story of her time spent living here in Bath between 1801 and 1806.
For a different view of Bath, take a stroll on the Bath Skyline Walk. This is located a short distance from the city centre and is a 10-kilometre/6-mile route that takes you through lush meadows, secluded valleys and ancient woodlands.
Bath has a Christmas market each year in the city centre with wooden stalls packed with festive gifts and seasonal treats (plus warming glasses of mulled wine).
