Bratislava is a historical city known for its old-world charm and interesting architecture while on a Slovakia vacation. It has been part of the Roman Empire, the Kingdom of Hungary and the Hapsburg Monarchy. In 1993, it became a country separated from Czechoslovakia. In recent times, the city has undergone a great reconstruction and cultural reawakening. Slovakia’s charming capital boasts a small but beautifully restored old town of baroque palaces interspersed with leafy squares. The local culture has been influenced by various ethnic and religious groups including Germans, Slovaks, Hungarians, and Jews. Geographically, it straddles the Danube River.
Starting with the Old Town, one can enjoy a walk through narrow winding streets and discover not only fascinating architecture but also many cafes, bars and restaurants. There are two main squares, Hlavne Namestie (Main Square) and Hviezdoslavovo Namestie (Hviezdoslav Square, named after a famous Slovak poet).
Some of the principal sights include the Gothic St. Martin’s Church, the largest church in Slovakia and former coronation church for several Hungarian kings, Bratislava Castle located on a hill-top dating back to the1600’s, the Slavin Monument, a memorial to the many Soviet casualties in the liberation of Bratislava during WWII, situated on the highest point of the city and offering great views, Maximilian’s Fountain designed in 1527, the Grassalkovich Palace built in 1760 and now the home of the president of Slovakia, Michael’s Gate and Tower with its green copper roof and one of the oldest buildings in the country, 50 metres/200 feet in height and dating back to the 14th Century and the interesting and different New Bridge, a flying saucer-shaped structure including a restaurant called UFO offering excellent views of the city while on a Slovakia vacation.
For culture, there are the Slovak National Museum, the Bratislava City Museum, the Jewish Community Museum, the Bratislava City Gallery and the Slovak National Gallery. Two very different museums are the Clock Museum and the Pharmacy Museum. For opera, ballet and drama, performances are mainly at the Slovak National Theatre. An enjoyable boar trip can be taken on the Danube River on a Slovakia vacation.
