Social Conventions
Islam plays a major role in Jordanian society and as such, Muslim beliefs should be respected. Women are expected to dress modestly, particularly when outside of cities. It is advisable that swim and beach wear should remain at the pool or beach.
When meeting people in Jordan, handshaking is quite normal. The Jordanian people are very hospitable and visitors are often made to feel very welcome. In order to repay such hospitality, a small gift is appreciated. During social situations, Arabic coffee is almost always served. When visitors have had enough coffee, they must simply slightly tip their cup when handing it back.
When taking photos in Jordan it is always polite to ask first, especially since in certain places, photography is prohibited.
Language
Arabic is the official language of Jordan. English is widely spoken in the cities, while French, German, Italian and Spanish are also spoken.
Religion
Approximately 92% of the population of Jordan is Sunni Muslim. A further 6% are Christian with the majority being Greek Orthodox. However, there are some Greek and Roman Catholics, Syrian Orthodox and Protestant denominations. The final 2% are comprised of small Shi’a Muslim and Druze minorities.
