Located in the west of Europe, Belgium is a relatively small nation that shares borders with the Netherlands in the north, Germany and Luxembourg in the east, and France in the south and west. Geographically, the country can be divided into three different regions: lower Belgium (100 m above sea level), central Belgium (between 100-200 m above sea level) and upper Belgium (from 200-500 m above sea level).  

Interestingly, this small country is also divided, in part, by language. The Flanders region is in the north and is home to the Dutch-speaking Belgian population, while the Wallonia region in the south hosts the French-speaking population. Both of these regions are divided into ten provinces, and Brussels, the country’s capital city, almost serves as a buffer being located right in between the two. The largest river in the country, the Scheldt, runs across Flanders, flowing out to sea at Antwerp. Wallonia, on the other hand, is landlocked but is used a great deal for farming.
