Zagreb is a distinctly Central European city located in the middle of the triangle of Vienna, Budapest and Venice. It has always been and remains a part of the cultural circle of central Europe. It has a tradition going back almost 1000 years and has managed to stay intact, offering visitors on a Croatia vacation pleasant walks through its many parks and pedestrian-only areas. Zagreb's architecture, streets, the squares of Upper and Lower Town, open-air green markets, churches and monuments are all witnesses to a history that has successfully resisted time. The surrounding areas are particularly attractive with rich vineyards, Medieval and Baroque castles (the greatest concentration of castles after the Loire valley) and many health spas.

The Upper Town) and Lower Town is the cultural, religious, and commercial hub of Zagreb. These are where most of the restaurants, bars and tourist sights are located. The Upper Town, which is the medieval core of the city, developed as two separate towns, Kaptol, the seat of the Bishop where the imposing Cathedral now stands and Gradec where tradesmen and artisans worked. Old Town Gate is now a shrine to the Virgin Mary. The portrait of Mary is said to be sacred because it is the only thing that survived the great fire in Zagreb in 1731. Strossmayer's Walkway, in the summer, is an outdoor area for painters, musicians and other artists offering food, drinks, performances and concerts. It is a popular meeting place for all ages with a great view of the Lower Town.

The Mimara Museum has a collection comprising more than 1,500 exhibits dating from the prehistoric period up to the 20th century. Some of the most famous exhibits include the works of Rafael, Caravaggio, Canaletto, Rembrandt,  Rubens, Van Dyck, Velasquez, Goya, Gainsborough, Turner, Manet, Renoir and Degas.

The Archaeological Museum possesses over 400,000 objects which include evidence of Croatian presence in this area as well as rare samples which have made the museum known to the whole world. The most famous are the Egyptian collection and the Zagreb mummy and bandages with the oldest Etruscan inscription in the world.

The imposing mountain overlooking Zagreb called Medvednica contains a preserved fortress and has amazing views of the city. It is the site of the Altar of the Homeland memorial, dedicated to Croatian soldiers who died in the Homeland war. There are many small restaurants and cafes at the top of the mountain to be enjoyed on a Craotia vacation package.
