When on German vacations, you should visit Munich,s the third largest city in the country after Berlin and Hamburg. It is located on the Isar River in the south of Bavaria and is famous for its beautiful architecture, culture and its annual Oktoberfest beer celebration. Munich's cultural scene is second to none in Germany with the museums even considered by some to outrank Berlin in quality. The city’s architecture is stunning with its mix of historic buildings and modern architecture. Although it was heavily damaged during World War II, many of its historic buildings have been rebuilt and the city centre appears mostly as it did in the late 1800s including its largest church, the Frauenkirche, and City Hall, the Neues Rathaus.

Munich is a major international centre of business, engineering, research and medicine reflected in its two research universities and the headquarters of several multinational companies. It is Germany's most prosperous city and one of the fastest growing.

The very heart of Munich is the Marienplatz, a medieval-like square which contains some of Munich’s most important buildings and where you find yourself right in the heart of old town Munich. The facade of the Rathaus (City Hall) is gigantic. The City Hall is constructed in the Flemish Gothic style and its facade is more than 90 metres/300 feet in length the ornate stone ornamentation on the exterior is stunning. There are wonderful stained glass windows, beautiful vaulted ceilings, intricately carved woodworking and a labyrinth-patterned floor in the inner courtyard. The crowning glory of the Neues Rathaus is its world-famous "Glockenspiel", the fourth largest in Europe. Each day at 11 am, Noon, and 5 pm, thirty-two near-life-size figures give a performance for the crowds that gather at Marienplatz to watch. The landmark Frauenkirche, Munich’s cathedral, is just around the corner. Built between 1468 and 1488, it is Munich's, spiritual heart. No other building in the centre of the city is taller than its onion-domed twin towers, which reach a height of 99 metres/325 feet.

The Munich Residenz, in the centre of the city, is the former royal palace of the Bavarian Monarchs. It is the largest city palace in Germany and is today revered for its architecture, room decorations and displays from former royal collections. It consists of ten courtyards and 130 rooms to be experienced on travel to Germany.

One of the major pleasures of a visit to Munich is to simply walk along its four grand royal avenues of the 19th century with their magnificent official buildings connecting Munich's inner city with its suburbs. The neoclassical Briennerstrasse opens into the impressive Konigsplatz. The area around Konigsplatz is home to the Kunstareal and Munich's gallery and museum quarter. Ludwigstrasse is home to the Ludwig-Maximilians University the St. Louis Church, the Bavarian State Library and numerous state ministries and palaces. The neo-Gothic Maximilianstrasse, where the Residenz and the National Theatre are situated, is framed by neo-Gothic buildings which house the Schauspielhaus and the Museum of Ethnology. The western portion of Maximilianstrasse is known for its designer shops, luxury boutiques, jewellery stores, and one of Munich's foremost five-star hotels, the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten. Prinzregentenstrasse is home to many centres of culture such as the Haus der Kunst, the Bavarian National Museum and the Schackgalerie.

There are many museums mentioned in Munich but two need to be emphasized. The Deutsches Museum or German Museum is located on an island in the River Isar and is the largest and one of the oldest science museums in the World. The city has several important art galleries. One of the best-known is the Alte Pinakothek with its treasure trove of works by European masters between the 14th and 18th centuries which should be visited on German tours.

One cannot forget Munich’s very important beer festival on travel to Germany, Oktoberfest. Despite its name, most of Oktoberfest occurs in September. For two weeks, Oktoberfest attracts millions of people visiting its beer tents. The Hofbrauhaus, possibly the most famous beer hall worldwide, is located in the city centre.

Munich is a green city with numerous parks. The Englischer Garten, close to the city centre and covering a large area is bigger than Central Park in New York. It is in fact one of the World's largest urban public parks and contains jogging tracks, bridle paths and multiple Biergartens.
