It shares international borders with both the Cunene and Cuando Cubango provinces of Angola in the north and the northeast. Within Namibia, Ohangwena borders Kavango in the east, Oshikoto in the south, Oshana in the southwest and Omusati in the west.
The Ohangwena region is home to the Owambo people who are Namibia’s largest cultural group. The northern and western parts of the region are the areas that are most densely populated. The cultivation of mahangu, also known as pearl millet is an important part of the culture, and so too is cattle farming. The capital of the region is Eenhana and its name comes from the Oshikwanyama word for calves. Located in the capital is the Eenhana Memorial Shrine dedicated to the men and women who lost their lives in the fight for Namibian independence.
Due to its proximity to Angola, many businesses have chosen Eenhana as their base. Another village, Oshikango (which is part of the larger town of Helao Nafidi) is considered the gateway between Namibia and Angola. The border post located in Oshikango is known for being the business hub of Namibia’s north providing many opportunities for the village and the surrounding areas.
